Professionally I am a creative organizer. I go into people’s homes and offices and I organize what is ‘out of wack’ to them. Recently I was working with a woman who was saying how much she appreciated the way I organized. She had had someone else help her organize before and her philosophy was to throw everything out. I just gasped.  That is not the answer to being organized.

I have noticed there are generations of people ‘out there’ who have that same philosophy.  They think they can just go buy a new one of what ever it is, ‘like easy come, and easy go’. This could become expensive and wasteful and disrespectful to us as well.

‘Out with the Old and In with the New’ is a phrase we hear this time of year as it is the beginning of a new year and for many new beginnings, including getting rid of clutter and ‘stuff’. But the answer to being organized is not to throw everything away.

First it is necessary to take a look at what we have in our homes or offices. Then evaluate each room, making an assessment about our things we own and decide if they fit into our lifestyle and available space.  We can ask ourselves; do we like the ‘stuff’ we have, does it light us up, why are we keeping certain things, is there a purpose or a reason to keeping all we have? Is what we have dragging us down emotionally and physically?  Are we irritable or unable to focus on what is important to us because our personal belongings cluttering our lives and our space?

If we are not comfortable with what we have then it is time to rearrange, donate, organize or toss; starting with one room at a time. By setting goals and taking baby steps we can have an organized home or office which will bring us rich rewards. A baby step could be as small as clearing just one drawer out of six at one time. Then if we are on a roll do a second one and on and on until the entire room is organized to our satisfaction, not to others expectation, but to ours.

By organizing the old as well as the new a happy, creative, productive and satisfying balance can be achieved in our homes and in our offices.
