Help For Seniors In their Homes

Thursday, July 31st, 2008 by admin

Organizing senior homes to help you get around Yesterday a friend who is 85 said he had been to the doctor and was told there were no spare parts for his model. He said things are just wearing out. We all get older and at some point our body parts cease working as well as they used to.

When I organize for seniors I sometimes see that their very homes become obstacles.

The necessity of a walker, crutches, a chair in the shower, wheelchair, or other aid can quickly illuminate some of the “getting-around” difficulties in their homes but a few adjustments may need to be made. Even if it is something as simple as getting a different style of doorknob.

One place you can find home modification ideas is in ‘Easy Access Housing for Easier Living’, a booklet distributed by the Easter Seals Foundation. Call 800-221-6827 for a free copy.

Check out www.trspace.com if structural modifications are called for. They have a helpful manual called ‘The Right Space’ which has hundreds of 3-D drawings of how a modification should be undertaken.

Renew And Rejuvinate Your Spirit

Visit Acacia Catalog for Body, Spirit and HomeYou know sometimes in all our efforts of organizing, running the kids here and there, going on vacation, planning meals and the other hundreds of things we do every day we just need to stop and say, “whoa”.

My daughter just did that very thing. She bought the most beautiful and unique bracelet from a wonderful company called Acacia Catalog. The bracelet is made of nature’s little gems from the shores of the Great Lakes. The stones are tumbles and oh so smooth. Interspersed are sterling silver charms with leaves and flowers etched in them to make them unique and quietly beautiful. It is a calming and restful piece of jewelry.

In our busy lives let’s take time to pamper ourselves and find joy in living for us as well as for others. What are you going to do this week to pamper yourself and rejuvenate your spirit of self worth? I am going to finish a quilt that I have laid out on the floor in my sewing room. And I am going to organize my office armoire where I keep office supplies. I just can’t help it, I love to organize, it gives me energy and makes me happy.

Passport and Traval Tips

Organizing your documents for easy summer travel for women and seniors Talk about fast. Okay, let’s talk about it. I was adding important documents to my Securita Vital Records Porta Vault when I realized my passport had expired in March of this year. I didn’t think I was going to be traveling abroad any time soon so I just put it in the back of my mind that I would need to get it renewed sometime this year. Big mistake.

Two months later my daughter got this great deal for me to go with her to Japan. I only had three weeks to get my passport. I am happy to report it took only ten days from the day I mailed off my passport application, photos and fees to get it back.

I did have to pay an expedited fee and the overnight fees for quick delivery. See, I could have done it back in March and it would have cost a lot less. Oh well, I didn’t and I am just happy I got it in plenty of time so I can travel.

Along with my passport a brochure from the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs Travel Tips was included. If you are planning a trip abroad visit travel.state.gov for general travel information. You can even register your trip at US Department of State. The information can assist the Department of State to help us in case of an emergency. The registration took several minutes, but it was easy with only a few simple steps to complete.

Happy Birthday Beatrix Potter

Monday, July 28th, 2008 by admin

Wonderful Childrens Book Author. Rabbits and wonder abound in these books When I went to Google today I saw the cutesiest little playful rabbits and I wondered what holiday they could be celebrating. As I looked at them I decided maybe it was Beatrix Potter’s birthday. Google temporarily changed its trademark logo on its homepage in honor of Potter’s birthday. I went to Wikipedia and this is what I found out about Ms. Potter.

On July 28, 1866, she was born in South Kensington. She was educated at home by a succession of governesses; she had little opportunity to mix with other children. Even Potter’s younger brother, Bertram, was rarely at home; he was sent to boarding school, leaving Beatrix alone with her pet animals.

She had frogs, newts, ferrets and even a pet bat. She also had two rabbits — the first was Benjamin, whom she described as “an impudent, cheeky little thing”, while the second was Peter, whom she took everywhere with her, even on the occasional outings, on a little lead. Potter would watch these animals for hours on end, sketching them. Gradually the sketches became better and better, developing her talents from an early age.

In 1897, her paper on the germination of spores was presented to the Linnean Society by her uncle Sir Henery Enfield Roscoe, as women were barred from attending meetings. (In 1997, the Society issued a posthumous official apology to Potter for the way she had been treated.)

Potter eventually wrote 23 books, all in the same small format. Her writing efforts finally abated around 1920 due to poor eyesight.
I love her books and the contribution she has made to literature in my life. Happy Birthday to Beatrix Potter.

Safety When Traveling Out Of Country

Monday, July 28th, 2008 by admin

Organizing your papers for your summer travel I am getting ready for a trip to Japan so I was doing some research and I read something alarming. Someone wrote an article suggesting when you travel to email yourself your credit card numbers, passport number, and airline information. Their thinking was if you needed them you would only be a computer away from the information.

No, No, No I was shocked. If someone were to hack into your computer they would have your important information. What to do instead:

•Give a friend or relative a copy of your passport.
•Give a friend or relative a copy of your credit cards if you feel you must.
•Carry with you the number to call to report stolen credit cards.
•Use a money belt where you can keep your passport and cards around your waist at all times when you travel.

To be for-warned is to be for-armed. I had over $10,000.00 charged on my credit card and didn’t find out until I was home from Brazil. But because the credit union is insured I didn’t literally lose any of that money or have to pay it back.

Have you ever had anything stolen when you were out of the country? What did you have to do to recover your property or to get out of the country?

Sweet traveling to you.

Happy Pioneer Day

Pioneer Day for Utah's men, women and seniors Happy 24th of July. In Utah we celebrate Pioneer day AKA Days of ’47 because July 24 is the day the Mormon pioneers finished their long trek from Iowa to the Salt Lake Valley. It is fun having two patriotic days to celebrate in July with parades, fireworks and fairs. It is a Utah State holiday.

In Bountiful our parade is on the 23rd so it won’t interfere with the really big one on the 24th in Salt Lake City. We went last night and it was so much fun. We sat in the perfect place—where the bands play and the Highway Patrol do their fancy maneuvering on motorcycles. Everyone stood up as the flag bearers came by; carried this year by fire fighters instead of military personnel.

When the float came by with about 25 veterans from World War II on down to our current conflict we stood and clapped. I know I for one am grateful for those who have fought for me so I can have the freedoms I enjoy today.

As I was watching this morning the SLC parade on T.V. they said there are camps and classes for people to learn how to make floats. I had no idea. It just goes to show—no matter what you want to do or what you want to learn there is an expert teaching how to do it. And you know how my mind works–I marveled at all the organization that goes into coordinating the making of a float and the putting together a parade.

Had you ever heard of a camp to teach how to make a float? What is the most unusual camp or class you have heard being taught? Do you have a holiday specific to your state?

4 Tips For Garage Storage

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008 by admin

organizing your home garage for women and seniorsI have a funny story to share with you. At least I think it is funny. I was organizing a woman’s garage yesterday and her 16 year old boy was helping me by lifting things and putting boxes on high shelves. I came across a large canvas bag tied with rope at the top. I handed it to him and asked him if he knew what was inside.
He said he didn’t and when he couldn’t get the rope undone he peered into the bag and said, “It smells, it smells like old people”. After about 2 seconds he said, “Oh you don’t smell”. I laughed so hard. To him I would be old.

As a professional organizer I want to share a couple of tips about organizing a garage.

•Go through every box and label all boxes you are going to store in the garage.
•Label on a piece of paper and write with a permanent marker in large letters so it can be read at a glance from a distance. I don’t suggest writing on the container because items change from time to time in the containers.
•Designate zones or areas for the different items stored in the garage. Such as a zone for sports equipment, gardening tools, gardening fertilizers, camping supplies, holiday decorations, painting supplies, car supplies and carpenter tools.
•Organize the garage at least twice a year to keep it from becoming a disaster area.

It is nice to use the garage to park cars in and have enough room to store items so they can be used and accessed when needed.
Do you have a favorite garage tip that has solved a problem you have had?

What Is Your Organizing Style?

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008 by admin

Organizing with your own style in your home and officeI was at a friend’s home waiting for her to come out of the house so we could go shopping. The man next door was using a leaf blower to clean off his drive way. He was blowing dirt, not leaves. As I sat and watched him I thought why I hadn’t I ever thought of that. A leaf blower was just that to me. It was to blow leaves.

I live in the second driest state in the United States so I am always looking for ways to conserve water so I don’t use water to clean off my drive way. I had been sweeping it with a large broom. This was an Ah-ah moment. I bought a blower and cleaned off my driveway with it. I read somewhere that the noise from the blower is someone’s pet peeve. Every time I use it now I hope it isn’t a pet peeve of my neighbors.

When I use it I have to attach an extension cord. I can always find one because I have a basket on a shelf in the garage (one of my organizing ideas a few years ago) that has worked as well as hanging it on a nail. (That was a little side tip). Anyway, when I was getting out the cord I was thinking how nicely my husband puts the cords back and I like that. I try to do it as nice but frankly that is why they are in a basket, they are contained and I don’t have to be so careful winding it up when putting it away.

I guess my professional organizer mind kicked in and I thought of the different styles of organizing. I like the way my husband puts the cords away but other things he does drives me crazy. He often does not put things away where they belong. I have learned to live with it and I quietly put them where they go so he doesn’t have to ask, “Have you seen the hammer”?

What organizing style do you have and how do you help others to stay organized?

Time Management and Forgetfulness

Monday, July 21st, 2008 by admin

Organizing your thoughtsSome days you do what you have to do to get the job accomplished. My daughter was laughing at me the other day because I went down stairs and I had my arm out straight and was muttering to myself. (sheets, sheets, sheets) There are days when I just forget what I am going after from one room to the next. Just saying what I needed out loud was not enough so I put my arm out and away I went. Other than the laughter it helped with people not distracting me by asking me a question on my way.

Sometimes when I forget I have to go back to the place I thought about what I was going for and it comes back to me. Because I am big into time management and this is a waste of time to have to do this I am always looking for other solutions—hence my arm pointed straight out charging away.

Do you ever forget what you were going after? What trick do you do to remember?

Planners Make Life Easier

Saturday, July 19th, 2008 by admin

Organizing your life using a day planner, organizerI don’t believe in using this phrase: “Do as I say, not as I do”. Well, I have to eat my hat—or is it eating crow? Sometimes I can’t believe myself. My confession is this……

Twice this week, not just once, I am chagrined to say, but twice this week I have committed to doing two things at the same time. And all because I didn’t check my planner first. Actually until now I think that is about the first time in over 20 years I have failed to look at my planner first before saying yes to a request. I was able to change one appointment and get someone else to fill in for me so everything is covered, but it could have been avoided.

When I am organizing for women, seniors, doing home organizing or office organizing I usually always (my English teacher would cringe over those two words being put together) talk about and try to gently persuade and educate on the importance of using a planner.

Why planners are important; I actually think necessary:

•Keep track of appointments
•Make new appointments without going home to check a calendar first
•Shopping list is always at hand in case you just happen to stop in a store unexpectedly
•Frequently used phone numbers are always handy
•We are just too busy to remember everything
•They keep us organized, that is to say it is a very effective organizing tool—if it is used

Do as I say and as I (99.9% of the time) do. Your life will be made simpler and easier.

What do you use your planner for and what is your favorite kind and why?
