Two Plus Organizing Tips To Reduce Clutter

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008 by admin

Organizing tips for clutter controlIs one of your resolutions for the new year to remove clutter from your home in 2009? Here are two organizing tips on how to reduce clutter:

1. Use a planner. The benefits are you don’t have to keep everything in your mind. You will get more done as you will know what needs to be done and you can check it off. This removes mind clutter.
2. Get your name off junk mail lists. I use proquo.com This has cut my junk mail by 90%. (You are probably tired of hearing me say this—I get nothing from them, I just like their system).

Here are a couple of examples on how I cleared clutter from my office after the holidays: I had two cards I had saved from friends that had information I needed. I wrote down the email addresses and phone numbers in my planner and recycled the cards. I made a note to email them on a certain date.

I had quickly unloaded my fanny pack from skiing and had thrown some receipts on my desk. I took 10 seconds and looked at them and then shredded them. I usually ( I would have said always) put my receipts in a file labeled “receipts” in my file drawer. This really helps keep my desk uncluttered. This organizing tip alone saves me a lot of time as I don’t ever have to look for receipts I may need.

Removing clutter in our homes and in our lives frees us up to do other things we would rather be doing; it gives us freedom and peace of mind. In the New Year I will share organizing tips and organizing ideas on how to reduce clutter in our lives, homes and in our minds.

We would love to hear your clutter clearing ideas and tips. What is your favorite one?

Four Guilt Free Timely Organizing Tips

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008 by admin

Organizing tips for clutter controlI was in a workshop several years ago and on the board the instructor wrote: “Today I won’t should on myself”. At first when we read it we all chuckled a bit as it soundly closely like something else. He went on to explain that when we tell ourselves “I should do this, I should do that” it brings on feelings of guilt and is not a positive way to get things accomplished. As I started my day today I caught myself saying, “I should” and I quickly replaced this with “I will”. I immediately felt a difference in my attitude and the way I was approaching what I wanted to do. I actually felt lighter and positive.

A friend wrote me today and said she knew she “should” get organized, but she is away from home 13 hours a day between working and commuting and she is exhausted when she gets home. Here are a four organizing tips I shared with her:

1. Instead of looking at everything in your home all at once and saying everything needs to be organized, chose only one place to start. (I am choosing my desk. As I look around I wonder what on earth has happened to it—it has become a dumping ground during the holidays).
2. Organize in small chunks of time; don’t try to do it all at once. Set your timer and only work on an area for 15 minutes. Then take a break and come back the next day to do more.
3. Get your name off junk mail lists. Just having 90% less mail to sort through saves a lot of time both mentally and physically! I use Proquo.com and it has reduced the junk mail I receive by 90%.
4. Decide not to tell yourself “I should”.

I know it is hard to work and is tiring to keep a clean organized home, take care of the kids, and have time for ourselves. By using these four organizing tips I know they will save you time and help free you from feeling guilty.

Monday's Easy Organizing Ideas

Monday, December 29th, 2008 by admin

Organizing tips for clutter controlI know so many people who don’t like Monday’s. How about you? I like Mondays because I have one more day in my life to enjoy even if it is hectic or not. A friend once said to me, “I like Mondays because without a Monday there wouldn’t be any Friday”.

One of the things people I know don’t like about Mondays is getting ready for the work day and the hassle it is to get out of the house. Here are two organizing Ideas to help with the Monday hassles:

1. Get ready the night before—decide on what you will wear, have the children lay out their clothes, plan a simple breakfast and get up on time.

2. Angela from Melbourne Australia has a great organizing idea I wanted to share with everyone. (Just in case you missed it in the comments). “The one that made the most difference to our mornings when the children were teenagers: We installed a clock in the bathroom, so everyone knew the correct time. Then the most important part was the car left for school/work at the designated time every time. If you weren’t in the car you were left behind and had to make your own way. It took maybe a week for this strategy to work. No more running late, no more frustration at waiting”.

Mondays are going to come around if we like it or not so why not make it a great day of the week too?

Organizing tips for clutter control during Christmas and New YearsToday is the day before Christmas. Our family will be making this Christmas breakfast tonight. It is very good and it is a long standing tradition in our family to make this. I wanted to share this with you, my wonderful blog readers:

Organizing Ideas Include Santa

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008 by admin

Organizing tips for clutter control during the Christmas Holiday SeasonEveryone has their own jobs at Christmas which dawned on me when I was “Miser Brother’s Christmas”. It is tradition in our family to watch “It’s A Wonderful Life”, The Polar Express”, “Rudolph”, and “Frosty The Snowman” just to mention a few. Santa delivers the toys, elves make the toys, the north wind blows to help Santa, and on and on.

That is how it is with organizing. We can make our lives easier, save time, and teach responsibility by assigning everyone their own ‘thing to do’ when it comes to organizing. Here are a few organizing ideas when assigning everyone something they are to be responsible for:

1. When children are young start assigning them responsibilities. (Picking up toys, matching socks, setting the table etc.).
2. Let the assigned person do their job. If it isn’t done then they can see it is important for them to do their job. And natural consequences will follow and they will quickly learn that they are being depended on.
3. Christmas is a great time to assign different jobs to everyone—shopping, putting the decorations away, cooking, cleaning, and the list goes on and on. “Many hands make light work”.

What organizing ideas have you used that has saved you time, energy and the frustration of doing everything yourself? We would love to know!

Happy Holidays to you and your family.

Recipie For EASY Festival Caramel Treats

Monday, December 22nd, 2008 by admin

Organizing tips for clutter control during the Christmas HolidaysI can’t believe it is already Christmas week! I wish the days in December would slow down.

I made these yummy puffed rice balls and sent to my grandson for Christmas. (Don’t cha just love getting things in the mail?) I sure do.

I got this recipe from the Festival of Trees charity for medically needy children years ago and they are so good. This year I had to go to four different grocery stores before I found the puffed rice. What is up that? Actually when I was at the one store I called the others to see if they carried it. (A little time management tip—call around instead of driving around).

Festival Caramel Puffed Rice Balls
12 ozs puffed rice (This was two bags from my store)
2 cubes butter
2 cups brown sugar
1 cup white corn syrup
1 can sweetened condensed milk
Combine butter, sugar and corn syrup; bring to a boil and boil 3 minutes. Remove from heat and add sweetened condensed milk. Return to heat and boil 3 minutes more; pour over puffed rice and cool slightly. Form into lightly greased molds or into balls.
I have made these into balls, but for the holidays I like making them in the plastic molds. It makes about 30.

Do you have a special treat you make only at Christmas that your family looks forward to eating?

Magic Reindeer Food For The Neighborhood Kids

Saturday, December 20th, 2008 by admin

Organizing tips for clutter control during the Christmas HolidaysCan I do an addendum to a blog I did earlier this week? I hope so because I am.

I made the magic reindeer food and I wanted to show how cute it looks in its little sacks. We are going to deliver it to the children in our neighborhood the week of Christmas.

I didn’t put in the sugar because we do have deer here and we don’t think sugar is good for them. But if you live in an area that doesn’t have deer then it wouldn’t be a problem. I did sprinkle a little green and red sugar crystals in the bag though.

The cute tags I printed from the web site called Organized Christmas. Are you doing anything special for the animals or birds that live in your neighborhood for Christmas?

10 Organizing Tips To Have A Fun Open House Party

Friday, December 19th, 2008 by admin

Organizing tips for clutter control during the Christmas HolidaysI just have to tell you how exciting it was last week to be invited by the Governor and his wife to their home—They live on the second floor in the Governor’s mansion in Salt Lake City. Because I am a docent (as I have said before) we were on the guest list with about 300 others. As we were standing in line I saw Jake Garn (a congressman who went into space) which was pretty fun for me. The governor walked over to me, shook my hand and then we stood with him and his wife to have a photo taken with them and the Lt. Governor and his wife.

On the third floor in the ballroom we had wonderful H’ordourves. I was thinking of all the things that have to be organized for an open house this size or for an intimate one in our own homes. So today I am sharing some organizing tips for a successful open house on a much smaller scale.

Organizing Tips when planning a party:
1. Plan size, type, date, time and place.
2. Write out the guest list.
3. Send the invitations—either by e-vite on the computer or through the mail.
4. Decide what food will be served and how it will be served.
5. Shop for the ingredients.
6. Check the serving pieces to ensure there is enough and that they are clean.
7. Make the food if you’re not having it catered.
8. Plan what activities you are going to have—games, eating, drinking, or movies etc.
9. Welcome guests with open arms and have fun at your own party!
10. Be sure your plans have included you to be at the party and not stuck in the kitchen. Your guests came to be with you, not your home.

What organizing tips do you have that make a successful open house/party?

3 Organizing Tips To Keep Track of New Addresses

Thursday, December 18th, 2008 by admin

Organizing tips for clutter control during Christmas HolidaysI love getting Christmas cards. How about you? Every now and then there are envelopes with new addresses. I usually just tear off the address and put it in the window sill until I can move it to a more secure place. My friend Edna called and said she had the best idea on how to keep those change of addresses without losing them so I am passing it on:
Organizing tips to keep track of those new address labels from Christmas cards:
1. From Edna: She has a little Christmas tin she keeps on her kitchen table and when she finds little odds and ends which includes new addresses she put them in there where she can find them when she needs them. (She transfers them to a book later).
2. Tape them in your address book with a little piece of tape until you have time to transfer them.
3. Drop everything and run to your computer and type it in your outlook. (I am just kidding). But do put it in a place you can find it later so you can put it in your paper or computer address book when you have time.

What organizing tips do you use to keep track of new addresses of your friends?
