Priortize To Get Rid of Clutter

Saturday, May 30th, 2009 by admin

Congratulations to Marilyn on her organizing bookMy book is done!! For those of you who didn’t know I wrote a book for a publishing company who found me through my articles on the web and asked if I had ever thought about writing a book. Long story short, they liked what I proposed and Go Organize! Conquer Clutter in Three Simple Steps will be in major book stores this December.

I just did my last author read through cover to cover and now I have to reorder my priorities. What will I do with my extra time? One of the first things I did was go to bed earlier and I got a full 7 hours of sleep. I know they say everyone needs 8 hours, but I personally believe it depends on the person how much sleep they need. I do well on 6 hours.

Which brings me to my favorite thing to chat about—organizing to get rid of clutter. There is not just one way to get rid of clutter. There are some simple guidelines to follow to make it easier, faster and last longer. One simple suggestion I believe in is to work from the inside out in any room in your home. In the bedroom, start in the closet or in a drawer. In the kitchen start in the cupboard or a drawer. You get the idea, no matter what room it is that you want to get rid of clutter don’t tackle the counter, floor or what is on the chairs first.

What is your super doper tip to get rid of clutter?

Project Accomplished In Getting Rid Of Clutter

Friday, May 29th, 2009 by admin

clutter control for your home, office and travelsI love the ocean and I love going to beaches. I collect sea shells everywhere they wash up on shore and I have been known to buy a few shells. When I was in Martha’s Vineyard a couple of years ago I saw a little suitcase with sea shells glued all over it. I thought with all of my shells I could do that and save myself over $400.00. (That is not a typo).

I am working on getting rid of clutter in my home and this project had moved to the top of my list. I took the shells from a cupboard, a couple of drawers and I bought for $3.00 a little suitcase. It took me about 3 hours to do this project over two days.

I am so happy that I have finally accomplished this goal and it feels soooo good getting rid of clutter. Now all of my shells are in one place and I can enjoy the memories this brings back of my trips to different places when I look at it. And I no longer have shells here and there. They are all in one place and I no longer need to keep collecting.
Getting rid of clutter is all good.

Get Rid Of Clutter In Your Home

Thursday, May 28th, 2009 by admin

Clutter control for your home and life I just got back from Hawaii. For those who don’t know this is a group of islands in the South Pacific and they are the 50th state of the United States.

clutter control for your home, office and travelsWe had beach time on stunning beaches and beautiful sunsets. We also did other fun and interesting things I will tell you about as the days go on.

clutter control for your home, office and travels My daughter in Utah wanted a lei so I asked around and everyone said Costco has the best prices. And they did. And you know what else they have? They have the same hours as they do here in my home town. I was dropping my daughter I traveled with off at the airport for her long flight back to her home and I thought I needed to hurry to Costco before it closes. I made it with 10 minutes to spare. It was nice not having to guess if they were on a different time schedule as ours is here.

When we get rid of clutter in our homes if we are consistent (like Costco with the times they open and close) it makes it easier for us as we don’t have to reinvent the wheel.

One way to get rid of clutter is not to bring it into our homes in the first place—toss junk mail, better yet get off those lists. Don’t just buy to be buying when we are shopping, buy with a purpose and when we buy something we don’t really like instead of letting it hang around— return it.

What are your tips to get rid of clutter? I know everyone has a favorite tip, please share.

Closet Organizing To Reduce Clutter

Thursday, May 21st, 2009 by admin

Clutter control for your closetDoes closet organizing get you down? Remember I am Showing and Sharing, these are not photos from a magazine. There are living and breathing people who use these spaces. Which means things are organized, but aren’t absolutely perfect.

As a professional organizer closet organizing is one of my favorite things to do. The messier the better as there is such great potential.

This is the hall closet. Coats are hung on wooden hangers with one hanger separating each person’s coats. This isn’t necessary, it is just something I am trying right now. On the top shelf are winter gloves and hats contained and easy to reach down when needed. The box with the vacuum bags is labeled so we don’t have to keep pulling it down and looking inside to see what is there. (I’m impressed I spelled vacuum right on the box).

An extra quilt is kept available for use in the nearby living room.

How do you clear clutter from your closet? What do you do to keep your closet organized?

The Fine Art Of Reducing Clutter In The Kitchen

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009 by admin

get rid of clutter in your kitchen and homeWe are almost through with my Show and Share Organizing. I hope you have picked up some organizing tips you can use. I have been surprised by things I have kept. But now I have also reduced clutter in my cupboards.

In this cupboard I again have added an extra shelf to double my space. Under the dinner plates are restaurant menus. I recommend putting them in a file in your file drawer if you have a lot of them. And you know my favorite filing system is Freedom Files. Since I only have a few they fit nicely in this space.

The corner removable shelf I have added also doubles my space and reduces clutter. I only keep the things I use and they are spaced so they are easy to reach.

The vitamins are contained in a little container and this is their home. A cup hook holds a set of keys. All of this helps reduce clutter as everything has a home and they live in their home when not being used.

I Plead Guilty

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009 by admin

getting rid of clutter Just thinking of cookie sheets makes me think of baking and cookies and I want some homemade chocolate chip cookies as I sit here. My mouth is watering too.

As I was clutter clearing and trying to figure out a better way to store my cookie sheets I came across this neat gadget. If I had known what it was intended for I wouldn’t have bought it. I am glad I didn’t know. It is to hold pan lids but you can see how I am using it.

In the back of this cupboard are my summer bowls which I will trade out with my snowflake bowls as soon as it gets warmer. And I too am guilty of keeping things “just in case”. In case of what I don’t know—how silly of me. See that blender in the back? I don’t even know why I kept it. Okay, I’m clearing clutter and getting rid of it now.—–There I did it, it is in the donate box. That sure feels good. I didn’t even know it was back there so what good would it have been to me “just in case”?

Do you have something you are hanging on to that creates clutter in your cupboards? Take a look and let us know what it is and what you did with it.

Protect Yourself From ON-Line Fraud

Monday, May 18th, 2009 by admin

clutter control for your home and officeWe live in a wonderful world where technology is always at our finger tips if we chose it to be. In getting rid of clutter on our computers we also need to be conscious of online fraud and ID theft.

One way to protect yourself from online fraud and ID theft is with the FREE state-of-the-art Rapport security software from Trusteer. Trusteer works with leading banks to prevent criminals from taking money from your accounts. Their service has been specifically designed to combat online banking and shopping threats and represents an essential part of your bank’s security systems. (I have looked at their web site but have not signed up yet. It looks good site recommended to me by my financial institution so I am passing on this site).

Other things to do to protect yourself online:

Don’t click pop-ups and don’t download files from websites you don’t trust.
When making online transactions, be sure web addresses begin with https (not http) and look for a key or padlock icon in your browser window.
Don’t surf to other sites while you are visiting a secure banking site; finish banking, always log out and close your browser before you move on.
Don’t click links or open attachments in suspicious emails.
Never send personal or sensitive information by email.

Choose passwords that are difficult to guess and change them on a regular basis. My son-in-law who is a computer expert said to use complex passwords. A complex password has a capitol letter, a symbol, a number and lower case letters. These don’t need to be in any particular order. The people looking for personal information have programs that search by all words that are in the dictionary. By creating a complex password it thwarts their efforts to get your personal ID.

Back up your important computer files at least once a month.

As a professional organizer I work with people who have been the victims of fraud and that is why I frequently talk about protecting yourself on the internet and at home.

Reduce Clutter By Keeping What You Use

Friday, May 15th, 2009 by admin

Reducing Clutter In The KitchenNow here’s a little cupboard put to good use and because of its size it is easy to reduce clutter.

I doubled the space by adding a removable shelf. I have my measuring cups in the basket so they stay contained and are easy to reach and take out of the cupboard.

The bottom cupboard has serving and storing bowls. The plastic bowls are both on the top and bottom in this half of the cupboard. This is a corner cupboard so the plastic storing bowls go back as far as I can reach. Again I have a shelf that goes all the way to the back corner.

To reduce clutter I have gotten rid of all bowls without lids and all lids without bowls. I also recycle any bowls we don’t use and those that are grungy looking.

How do you reduce clutter in your cupboards?
