When I say Wizard of Oz what comes to your mind? I think of Dorothy’s ruby red shoes. Judy Garland wore 6 different ruby red shoes during the filming and one pair is on display at the Modern History Museum in Washington D.C. I get a little thrill every time I see them.
As a professional organizer women say to me “I wish I loved to organize clutter”. Just like Dorothy who longed for a place where there isn’t any trouble we can have homes where there isn’t clutter. Let’s start with our shoes.
Let’s organize the clutter in our closets by considering these options:
1. In the bottom of your closet if you have floor space a wooden, moveable rack is a great organizer. IKEA has a two shelf rack that is ideal.
2. Hang a multi-pocket shoe organizer over the back of a closet door.
3. If you have room on your closet rod use a vertical shoe organizer. It hooks over the rod, it doesn’t work on the back of a door.
4. When you absolutely have no closet space a rolling under-the-bed organizer could be used. I don’t recommend this as it is cumbersome to get to and the more inconvenient something is to use the more likely it won’t be used and shoes won’t be put away but will be left scattered on the floor.
5. Stacking racks sit on the floor and some hold up to 30 pairs of shoes. Shoes are easy to reach and to put back on the rack.
Organizing shoe clutter is almost as easy as it was for Dorothy who clicked the heels of her ruby red shoes to make her wish come true. If your wish is to organize clutter in your closet as a professional organizer I recommend starting with the floor first where your shoes rest at the end of the day.
What’s your favorite way to organize clutter in your shoe closet? I have used both of the organizers show here and they both work great! they are sturdy and fit the space just right.

My friend Jackie Hollywood Brown (don’tcha love her name) from Canada wrote this on her blog (www.j-organize.ca) and she gave me permission to use it. It’s not so much about clutter control as it is for a laugh.
My friend Amber sent me a great tongue-in-cheek organizing tip:
I just have to say
I feel it is such a privilege when I am asked to share an organizing idea on T.V. I think of this as giving back to the community as a professional organizer. Last week when I was preparing to be a guest on KJZZ T.V. I was “worried” about wearing a certain necklace. I wondered if it was too long, too short, too distracting etc.
This is such a simple yet happy product review today. I saw these cute and colorful measuring cups and I just had to buy them and try them.
And of course the flowers cried out to measure flour for cookies as I needed to know if the flower shape would be a problem. No problem I am happy to report!
The only catalog I remember when I was growing up in a tiny town (population 2,500) in Oregon was a catalog we received in October. It was so exciting to look at the pictures and dream about the dolls and tea sets shown on the pages. I am told that in the “olden days” they used the pages of catalogs like we use charmin today.
What a difference it is now in the amount of catalogs we have delivered to our homes. As a professional organizer I find too many catalogs and magazines add to the clutter in a home. To get rid of clutter this week I looked in my catalog basket. Whoa! It had been awhile since I had recycled the old ones.
Getting rid of clutter isn’t always what we think it is. Debbie and I were in Italy a few years ago and she bought some fabric for a shower curtain. That was a fun experience as neither of us speaks Italian. But with gestures and a lot of laughs she was able to figure out with the clerk how much fabric to purchase for a curtain.
Many people are starting to garden and Carloyn M asked “how to organize large and small tools along with seeds”. Since I am not a master gardener I contacted my friend Rhea who is a master gardener. She was on Extreme Makeover Home Edition a couple of years ago helping to plant the flowers in the yard of the new house here in Bountiful.
