Getting Rid Of Clutter—Show ‘N Share Tuesday

How on earth do things get cluttered so fast? Could it be because instead of putting things away in an orderly way and where they belong they are just tossed in a cupboard and the door quickly shut?

I admit it; I am guilty (as I hang my head in shame–not that I need to, I just felt like it). But wait, all is not lost, I can redeem myself. Getting rid of clutter in this closet was a lot of fun. It only took me 7 ½ minutes. This is the shelf where I keep my gifts. I put the gifts in bags to contain them—that was simple!

I have a lot of bags in this closet and I neatly hung them up and what a difference it makes. FYI I hang my rolls of wrapping paper in a laundry bag. (See–on the left)

Getting rid of clutter in this closet has just made my day. I changed the padded mailing envelopes to a different spot in my office. The rain poncho I had bought for traveling I put it with my traveling stuff. Now why didn’t I do that in the first place? …. It’s a mystery.

Clear Clutter To Start Your Hair

That just cracks me up!
How many times have you said:
“Sorry I’m late, I couldn’t find my keys”.
“Sorry I’m late I couldn’t find my cell phone”.
“Sorry I’m late I couldn’t find my purse”.
Do you need to clear clutter so you don’t have to rush off to meetings or appointments and then still arrive late?

A simple yet effective way to clear clutter is to have homes for things and then always put them in their home after using them.
•Put keys on a cup hook in the cupboard or in a tray.
•Place your purse on a door knob or in a place that is out of the way—make a home for it and keep it in its home.
•Designate a home for your cell phone—a specific place to charge it and always charge it there.

If your hair won’t start and you are always late it is time to clear clutter.

Does Clutter Control Require Perfection?

I was watching a rerun of Frasier the other day and he said “Excellence does not demand (or require) perfection”. I thought how true that is with clutter control.

I have a cousin who is just like her mom was. She demands perfection with everything including clutter control. She makes herself physically ill when she has company because she cleans and declutters to the extreme her already clean, organized house.

What do you think is important when you go to work on clutter control? Do feel you are a failure if you don’t achieve perfection? Do you feel perfection is the only thing to strive for? Can we have excellence if our homes aren’t free of clutter?

Show ‘N Tell Tuesday–Clutter Control 7 Years Later

7 years ago we purchased a tread mill. With it came a cord I thought I would use someday. Well it is 7 years later and I was looking through my warrantee file and I came across this cord taking up space in my file. (As you know Freedom Filer is the one I use and recommend for clutter control).

Clutter control is easy when getting rid of things that are never used. I know this and I knew I would never be able to use this cord but I filed it anyway—what’s up with that?

So 7 years later I recycled the cord and it sure does feel good to do clutter control in my filing drawer. I hope it doesn’t take me this long next time to get rid of clutter.

I challenge you to find one thing that is clutter in your home (be brave) and let it go, then tell us what you got rid of.

Smokin’ Clutter Control For Collections

I just typed a 205 word blog and somehow I erased it so I am going to try to duplicate it—can you hear me screaming???

A friend showed a few of us around her beautiful home. In one room she had a wall to wall shelf full of attractively arranged bears. She said she used to collect bears but she kept the ones she really liked and gave the others away.

Someone with us said, “I am never going to collect because I don’t want to have to do clutter control as collections just become clutter.”

My antenna went up—that is just not true. Collections and clutter control do go together.

Clutter control for collections:
•Keep them corralled. (I keep my PEZ in a large (very large) filigree bowl).
•Rotate part of your collection in and out so they always seem new.
•Create space and homes for them.

Depending on the collection it will depend how you work your clutter control magic on them. (AKA how you display them). What do you think about collecting? It brings me happiness and joy—how about you?

Organize Clutter In A Snap In YOur Purse

I was standing in the checkout lane at our local Ace hardware store and I was looking for my sunglasses down in my purse. Out loud I said to no one in particular, “what makes its way to the bottom of your purse the fastest”?

Immediately the clerk replied, “My keys”. The other clerk said, “My cell phone”. Other things are lose change, tissues, receipts and glasses.

If you need to organize clutter in your purse I recommend the Purse Perfector. Everyone I know who uses this LOVES it and never has to search for anything in their purse ever again.

I don’t use a purse organizer because I buy purses that organize for me—there are pockets all around the sides and I have a planner that does the rest for me. Oh, I take that back. I also have two humbug bags. I use one for tissues and one for this ‘n that like lotion, clippers, floss etc.

4 Clutter Control Tips To Resist Temptations

Have you found any good temptations lately? I know, we don’t have to find them, they find us. I have an ongoing temptation and I suspect you do too. Is it time to find some temptations to help with clutter control?

It is putting things on flat surfaces. I have a book case just inside my office and it is so tempting to just reach inside and put down paper or other things that go inside the room. I give in to temptation sometimes and then I have to come back and do some clutter control.
4 Tips on how to keep flat surfaces free of clutter:
•Make a goal to keep flat surfaces clear of clutter. This little simple goal is very powerful.
•Educate your family that “stuff” is not to be placed on the table or other flat surfaces but is to be put away where it belongs.
•Put something pretty on a table like a table cloth or photos, a figurine or other items you enjoy. Only allow these things to “live” there.
•Make a conscious effort and encourage your family to do the same to resist the temptation to clutter flat surfaces.
