Shower Cap To The Rescue

Friday, March 30th, 2012 by admin

Clutter Control Product Review:

Have all you travelers already figured this one out? I hadn’t, even with all the traveling I do. Use the shower cap you get in almost every hotel/motel you stay in to put your shoes in so your clothes stay clean. Or buy a bag of them at your local dollar store.

I always use a plastic grocery bag (even though I use recyclable bags I usually seem to have some around) to put my shoes in. But the bag is bigger than I need and I can’t see through it so I have to open every one to see what pair of shoes I have.

A Streamlined Approach To Clutter Control

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012 by admin

“The mind may be compared to a garden, which it is as necessary to cultivate as any plot of earth, if order and beauty are to be manifested through it. –Marcus Manilius He was a Roman poet

If we want order and beauty in our homes it is necessary to cultivate a desire for clutter control. (Is that a stretch?) I don’t think so.

Before doing any clutter control we have to have a desire for lack of clutter. Depending on what is going on in our lives sometimes it is easier than at other times. And that is o.k. too, a garden doesn’t grow in a day and clutter control doesn’t have to happen all at once. (Aren’t we glad!)

To answer that question—YES. Why is that? Because we get overwhelmed and too tired when we try to tackle everything all at once.

Agree? Disagree?
Do you remember when you would write notes to your girl friend and you would ask a question and then draw boxes with yes or no next to them for her to mark? This reminds me of those notes.

5 Easy To Follow Tips For Paper Clutter

Show ‘N Share Paper Clutter Tuesday: (Day 4 of 5 showing clutter in my home)

Don’t you just love to file? Do you go to your mail box and pull out papers that need to be filed and you dance and sing all the way to your office because you have something that needs to be filed? (If you said yes I want to know if your nose is growing like Pinocchio’s did).

I use a fabulous filing system called Freedom Filer that I have set up for tons of my clients to get rid of paper clutter.
However…the best of systems is only as good as the person “using” the system. My files need some weeding out as they have become too full and it is harder to file in them than I like it to be. And besides I like tossing “things to be filed” in this basket and taking one day a week to file everything. It takes me less than 5 minutes to file. I chose a day that is less busy for me to do this and it is actually pretty relaxing.

To recap these filing tips:

•Use a fabulous system that is EASY
•File once a week
•Put all papers to be filed in one place
•File on a day that is less busy than others
•Keep files lean and up to date—I do this constantly as well as every 6 months I go through all of them one by one if they are over grown like the receipts one tends to do.

Dragons Fire Prevent Decluttering Your Home

Monday, March 26th, 2012 by admin

Monday’s De-cluttering Your Home Focus:

Back in medieval times map makers would put dragons on the maps when it was dangerous to travel that way. Those reading the maps would detour around these areas.
What are your dragons when it comes to getting organized? Do you have different dragons that stops you from getting rid of clutter or de-cluttering your home?

Do you hang on to beliefs like these…

• I can’t let go of anything because I might need it someday
• I am saving this for my children
• I don’t know where to start
• I’ve lived with it this long why get rid of it now
• If I organize I will never be able to find it again
• If I get rid of anything I will be throwing away my memories
• I don’t have time
• I don’t know where to put things

What are your dragons for not getting rid of clutter or for not decluttering your home? We all have different ones. What are yours? Do you like your dragons or do you want to get rid of them? When we face our dragons it is easier to let go and to declutter. Often the clutter is worse than any story we have made up about why we are keeping it.

Product Review for Clutter Control:

Are you forever picking up bobby pins off the bathroom counter or searching through drawers to find some? How about your tweezers or other metal essentials you keep in the bathroom?

This is a clever way to master clutter control over those essentials. Attach a magnetic strip on the wall. How simple is that? You could attach it behind the door if you don’t want it obvious in the room or on the inside of the medicine cabinet door.

“If I’ve told you once I’ve told you a thousand times”
–Just about every mother I have ever known

Does getting your family to clear clutter seem like this to you? May I suggest a different idea? Teach, train, follow through and assist family members in learning how to clear clutter.

To us it may seem so simple—yet it must not be or we wouldn’t have to tell them a “thousand times”.

What has been your most successful idea on getting your family to clear clutter?

Clearing Clutter Is A Major Stressor–True Or False

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012 by admin

Clearing clutter Show ‘N Share Tuesday (Day 3 of 5 showing clutter in my home)

Some have told me, “You are brave to show that you have clutter in your home being a professional organizer and all”. (What do you think “and all” means)? Anyway, again, I am not perfect, one thing for sure I do not let clutter pile up and live for long but I do get clutter creep sometimes.

This is a place I am constantly and I do mean constantly clearing clutter. I had it all nice and tidy because we took a 2 day trip to Las Vegas a couple of weeks ago and I had everything put away, then I got home and I have let the receipts “live” on my desk for a few days. It is just so easy to do.

If I took a photo today of my desk after my 10 minutes of clearing clutter you would see a nice and tidy desk. Clutter comes and clutter goes. Do you have the same experience with clutter in your home?

Multi-Task When Getting Rid Of Clutter?

Monday, March 19th, 2012 by admin

Monday’s Getting Rid of Clutter Focus:

Did you know Monday’s focus is a focus for the entire week? It does not have to be done all in one day.

Do you try to get rid of clutter while watching TV? or talking on the phone or while doing something else that is distracting? There is a time and a place to multi-task and getting rid of clutter can be one of those times—or not.

Our focus this week is to take 30 minutes or one hour while you get rid of clutter and focus on only that instead of being distracted.

What made me think of this is me. (I’m so funny) I am finishing my grandmother’s flower garden quilt. I am sewing the edge (by hand as all the rest of the quilt has been sewn by hand) and it is tedious, a bit hard and sometimes boring. I “watch” TV (more like listening to it) while I work on the edge. The other morning (at 5:20 a.m.) I didn’t turn on the TV but instead focused on doing just the edge.

I got twice as much done in less time than when I have the TV on. I keep telling myself, just one hour a day is all I have to work on it to get it done—and just like getting rid of clutter it is getting done, doing it a little at a time. I will soon be able to show you my completed quilt—after 20 years in the making. (I’ll show ‘n share all about it when it is done).

Only once this week focus on getting rid of clutter ONLY without TV or talking on the phone or whatever distracts you (well, music is a good thing if you like to listen and organize). Please let us know how you do as far as getting more done in less time—the bonus is then you can watch your program instead of just listening. Or get rid of more clutter.

Instant Stuffed Animals Storage Solution

Getting Rid of Clutter Product Review:

Here is another clever organizing tip to get rid of clutter which is very inexpensive:

Attach a Velcro strip to the wall to attach soft toys to. I am always being asked “how do I store stuffed animals”? This is a clever way to decorate the walls and get the toys out of the way. Several strips could be attached one above the other.

Velcro is a brand name but any hook and loop tape would work. Buy it at a hardware or fabric store.

HAPPY St. Patrick’s Day to you tomorrow. Be sure to wear the green to avoid being pinched. Does your country have this tradition?
