Do Your Socks Go On Safari?

Monday, September 21st, 2009 by admin

Getting rid of clutter in your homeI have rogue socks that take off for regions unknown; maybe they are going on safari or to a party but then always go alone. This week I have had two socks leave its mate. But it will be sorry when it finds out I was getting rid of clutter by organizing the sock drawer.

To get rid of clutter and organize any sock drawer this is how to do it:

l. Take out all of the socks. Spread them out so you can see every single sock.
2. Sort them by color and then by type (sport, dressy etc.).
3. Pair them up by folding the pair in half or fold one of the cuffs around both socks. Or just keep them flat together, the choice is yours.
4. Place the pairs back into the drawer by type.

Using containers keep them organized so they don’t get scrambled up in the drawer. Now if I can just find my rogue socks so they can live with their other half.

Oh, keep the strays separate from the pairs, and when they come home match them up but if you haven’t found them within a few weeks say goodbye to the single one.

Can you think of a reason to hang on to a lone sock? What have you done with just one sock?

clutter control for the bathroomWhen you have guests come to your home do you tidy up the bathroom and hope they don’t look in your drawers? (They shouldn’t be snooping, but maybe some do anyway).

The key to clutter control in this bathroom drawer is containers. By having a variety of containers everything has a home and so it is easy to stay on top of clutter control.

This ends my series of Show and Share—a professional organizers virtual guide of several cupboards and places in my home. Please leave a comment if this has been helpful and share with us how you keep clutter under control.

Is Your Drawer A Junk OR A Resource Drawer?

Friday, May 8th, 2009 by admin

clutter control for your kitchen resource drawerThis is my kitchen resource drawer. Some people call these junk drawers—I say change it to be a resource drawer. As you can see this is a tiny drawer—one of two total that I have in my kitchen I might add.

Organizing and reducing clutter in your resource drawer—no matter what size it is, it is easy to organize and keep organized by adding some containers and getting rid of clutter in the drawer.

Tips to organizing a resource drawer:

•Get rid of things that aren’t used.
•Make homes for things that don’t belong in this drawer and put them there.
•Use containers to reduce the number of things that live in this drawer.
•Do put what you use often in this drawer as it is premium space.
•Put like things together. I have rubber bands in a jar and twist ties in another. By having them in containers it has limited the amount that we keep and they aren’t just tossed in the drawer creating a mess. And I use another container to corral longer, larger items.

Would you share a photo of your resource drawer with us? If you would like to please email it to me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and we will post it.

Or leave a comment telling us what kinds of things you keep in your resource drawer and how you organize it to reduce clutter.

Is 14 Spatulas Clutter?

Thursday, May 7th, 2009 by admin

This is the 4th day of Show and Share week of different places in my home. For those of you who have just ‘tuned in’ I am a professional organizer and I am showing different places in my home that I have used clutter control and that I consider organized.

Clutter control for the kitchen

I know, I know, you saw the photo of my spatula’s and you gasped as you have read that you are only supposed to have one or two spatulas or rubber scrapers, but I like cute spatulas and scrapers. Since I don’t have drawers I have mine organized on the counter hiding my toaster which is only used about three times a week. The crocks are easy to move when we do need to get to the toaster.

Silverware drawers are a cinch to organize. First reduce clutter in the drawer by getting rid of gadgets you never use and only keep things you like and that you enjoy using. The next thing is simple, put likes together. I keep gadgets I use at the back of the drawer where they are easy to reach. I consider this as secondary space as I use the things there once or twice a week. My premium space is the silverware as that is used many times every day.

We would love for you to share a photo with us on how you organize your spatulas; just email it to me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or leave a comment telling us how you organize and reduce clutter in this drawer.

Getting Rid of Clutter Simplifies Our Lives

Monday, April 27th, 2009 by admin

Clutter control in your homeAre you on overload and you want to simplify your life so you have more time for yourself and your family? Let’s talk this week about how to simplify your life. As a professional organizer I suggest it may be as easy as getting rid of clutter.

I have a drawer that I thought was organized because all the extension cords were there almost neatly wrapped up and some floor cleaning pads.

I bought some cute cloth containers at IKEA last week and I was on a quest on how I could use them. I am always on the lookout for cute and useful containers and I am always getting rid of clutter so these two go hand in hand.

I first took everything out of the drawer with the pads and cords and I was in for a big surprise. Other things had started living there too instead of going to their own homes after they were used. (Wire, paint brushes, sand paper, and a few other things). They all have their own homes so vacation was over for them as I put them back where they belong.

I contained all of the extension cords so they now take up MUCH less space. AHHH, already I have simplified. I even gave a few cords away as I found I had way more than I can use.

What a simple thing it was getting rid of clutter to simplify my life.

What have you done this week to simplify your life?

Tweek Your Spaces To Stay Organized

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009 by admin

Organizing tips for clutter controlDo you have electrical tools that need recharging? When I start doing a project with my electric screwdriver and it only works for a few minutes it is so much harder to have to use a regular screwdriver and I wonder why I didn’t have it charged.

No matter how organized your closets, drawers and cupboards are it is a good idea to look through them about every three months or so and see if things are working for you and what if anything needs to be done to improve the way it is organized.

I was doing this in the space where I keep my rechargeable screwdriver and as I plugged it in I thought it was a good reminder for all of us to recharge tools before we have to use them.

Do you have some organizing tips about keeping closets and cupboards organized and what do you do to remind yourself to recharge tools before you need them?

Pink Polk-A-Dot Basket Is A Great Organizing Idea

Organizing tips for clutter control

Isn’t this the cutest and brightest little basket you have ever seen? I bought it when I was in Japan this summer. It was flat so I could slip it into my carry on luggage and it only cost 3 yen. (About 3 dollars) And the bonus is it is a great souvenir I could use it and it wouldn’t just become clutter.

I had no idea what I was going to use it for but it looked so bright and cheery I just had to have it. I knew I would find some way to use it and if I didn’t I would give it as a gift.

I found the perfect use for it right away. It holds the cords I am always using—USB cords, my cell phone recharger cord, and a small flashlight I keep in my office. It keeps these things contained and saves me time. I don’t have to hunt for the cords and I don’t have to wrap them up after I use them, I just toss them in the basket.

Another organizing idea would be to use it in a drawer to contain miscellaneous stuff that gets all tangled up with other stuff. It could also be used for hand towels.

How else could I use this container? Do you have a cute container you use? What do you use it for?

From the UK– Timely Organizing Tips

Friday, January 30th, 2009 by admin

Organizing tips for clutter controlOne of my blog readers from the UK said she didn’t know where to start because she needed to start everywhere. (Sorry, earlier I said she was from Australia). I suggested to her to start in one room, in one place in that room. She did it! She sent some great organizing tips that she used to get organized. I got permission to share them with you. This is what she did:

“I went into my bedroom and opened the drawer where I keep all my cosmetic type stuff. Well it really was Stuffed. I emptied the drawer and as it is quite wide managed to fit in four empty shoe boxes for sorting. You see I knew they would come in useful!!!!”

My comment: If you have a place you can store empty boxes to use later this is a great organizing idea. But when you keep more than you will possibly ever use and you don’t have space for those containers; that is when they turn into clutter. Keep what you will use and get rid of the rest—we will get more.

“I have seen expensive drawer organizers but this works a treat. I found six tubes of hand cream. One went by each sink (3), one by my bedside, one in my travel wash bag and one in the guest room. I get very dry hand skin so perhaps this will help!”

My Comment: Excellent way to use what you have and to make space in drawers—put the useful items where they will be used rather than just hording them.

“I then decided to get a nice basket to put in the guest room with the soap, some body lotion (I seem to have a lot of this as well!) And some of those freebees you get in hotel rooms like shampoo and shower gel sachets – I have quite a collection.”—“Well it’s a start”.

Organizing tips on clutter control

My Comment: That is how we get organized—we start! Good Job and happy organizing. You have a great start—now keep on by going from one drawer to another, from one shelf to another and one room to another room. Before you know it your entire home will be organized just the way you want it. Thank you for those timely organizing tips.

Organizing Tips and Organizing Ideas Need Some Help

Professional organizer poem for the dayHere is a poem from my daughter Julie

“She whispered in the wind, hoping her words would travel safely to the soft pink pools in their ears. Where they keep the memory of her childhood laughter, safely echoing and resting like she did in their arms when a child.”

I read this and thought that was nice. But I didn’t understand it until my other daughter re-read it to me and explained what it was saying. Wow! It is beautiful.

I think that is how it is with many of us; we want to get organized and we often “collect” organizing ideas and organizing tips but we don’t know what to do with the information. Sometimes we need someone else to help us understand organizing ideas or organizing tips in a different way.

I have a friend who bought a container to hold pens in her desk. The next day her girls took the container and were using it for something else. She jumped to the conclusion that containers don’t work and never bought another one for ten years. (GASP, containers make organizing fun, easy and simple). She had a good organizing idea but she needed more help or instruction on how to successfully use it.

A few things she could have done was to explain to her girls what it was going to be used for and if they needed containers for other things she would get them. She could have labeled the container. Labeling containers seems to anchor the contents to the container and it makes it easy to find things in them.

What is an organizing idea or organizing tip that has worked well for you?

Organizing Your Home

Organize your home and life the easy wayHave you ever played “What if I had three wishes what would I wish for”? Or “What if I only had three months to live what would I do between now and then”? Today let’s play “What if I have three organizing projects in my home to do, what do I do first”?

There are two schools of thought on which one to do first.

Doing the easiest one first can give you a feeling of accomplishment so you want to get to the other two. Unless you then think, well that was good, I will stop while I am ahead.

Doing the hardest organizing one first, or the one you have been putting off, the one you have been dreading doing; will also give you a feeling of accomplishment. And you will not only have accomplished it and it is behind you, but you can be energized to get to the other two done, if not today another day.

So really, the choice is up to you. I personally like to do the one I don’t want to do first because I don’t want it weighing on my mind that I have to get to it. As a professional organizer as I organize for women I like to start on the project she has been dreading because seeing success at having the dreaded project behind us shows that anything can be organized. In many cases it isn’t as bad as we thought it would be.

Which do you prefer organizing first? Easy or Hard?
