I Was Locked Out Of My Car And Far From Home

Monday, July 11th, 2011 by admin

The winner of the drawing for the hum bug bag is Fiona. I have already emailed you asking for your address. Thank you to everyone who left a comment both on my blog and on FB.

Did you know it was Samuel Newhouse’s dream that Salt Lake City Utah would be the Wall Street of the West? My daughter and I were privileged to be guides in the Boston Building which was part of his dream back in 1908.

After two hours of greeting the public and showing off this gorgeous building it was quite a shock to find we had locked the keys in the car.

I think you can guess what the Monday focus is. Now mind you, I had three keys so this would never happen to me again. I have actually done it 3 times with the car I own now.
My daughter has a key; I have one on my key ring and another one in my wallet which I usually have with me. But on this day all keys were in the locked car.
I thought I might have another one at my house. I didn’t. Long story short my new best friend is a nice young locksmith who came out on Saturday and in less than 30 seconds had my door open. Two other locksmiths answered their phones but said they couldn’t come until Monday.
It is routine for me to do clutter control on a regular basis. I am so glad I do because before I called the locksmith I had my friend search my cupboards to see if I had another spare key at the house.
Along with clutter control my Monday focus is to check your car key situation.

Have you ever locked yourself out of your car? What’s your story?

Clearing Clutter Made Simple (Really)

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011 by admin

Show ‘N Share Clearing Clutter Tuesday:

Did March come in like a lamb or in like a lion where you live?

I know you saw the video on clearing clutter but this is a bit different—I want you to think about getting rid of duplicates and triplicates if you don’t use those items.

My daughter organized her jockey box, a.k.a. glove compartment in the car while she was waiting for me to drop off my car at the mechanics. She found 3 Altoid tins, 2 large dental floss containers, 5 flashlights (how many flashlights does one car need?), a hand full of pens (most of them didn’t work) and 2 tire gauges. The point was she had duplicates and more of several items which she didn’t need or want. She donated the duplicates and got rid of things no one could use.

Do you have duplicates or triplicates or more of things you don’t need or want in your home? Clearing clutter made simple: just get rid of the excess.

What excess did you get rid of this week? We live with things for so long we don’t even see them and clutter piles up before we know it. I know, I’m in the same boat.

Declutter Your Home With Chic Organizer

Friday, February 4th, 2011 by admin

Product Review Friday:

My product review today to help you declutter your home is this organizer to carry in your purse, car and home. Michelle (of brownie fame) came up to me at rug hooking this week and said, “I have a product for you for product review Friday”.

This is a card organizer made by a local woman who does impeccable work. She does them out of different patterns on heavy vinyl. Look and you can see a zipper in the back and alphabetized dividers. On the other side there is an outside pocket with clear vinyl to hold a drivers license. (That was too personal to take a picture of).

Michelle said she has used it for awhile now and loves it. When she needs a debit card she just opens it and goes to the D. It saves her so much time. She has it packed tight so I know it holds a lot of cards.

It sells  for $20.00 which is well worth it with all the time and materials that go into making this compact organizer.

If you would like the contact information of the woman who makes them just email me and I will send it to you. This product can help you declutter your home because you could always lay you hands on all your reward and charge cards without searching drawers and wherever.

Do you have a favorite tip to declutter your home, purse, or car?

CONGRATULATIONS to JoAnne–you are the winner of the little organizer. Email me your address and I will get it right out to you. Thank you to all who left comments–such great tips you ladies have! I will have another giveaway soon. I want you all to win.

Pill Bags Cut The Clutter When Traveling

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009 by admin

Clutter control when travelingIn case you missed reading the comment from Ellen on my Organizing on The Go blog here is an excellent suggestion from her on how to pack all of your meds when you travel that will help with clutter control when on the road.

•Ellen from Calahan Solutions.com said:
“A new favorite bag is Ezy Dose(R) Pill Pouch. These little zip-close pill bags have a writable space to record the day of the week and whether the pills are for morning, evening or other. About half the size of snack-size plastic bags, they eliminate the need to take pill bottles or plastic daily reminder systems while traveling. At about 3 cents per bag, I save mine for reuse”.

She said she buys hers at Walgreens but they may be available at other stores that sell Ezy products. They also make other pill organizers.

Thank you for this timely clutter control tip. Summer is just around the corner and traveling will be made easier with these little pill bags.

How To Unlock Your Car Door Without Keys (True or False?)

Thursday, March 12th, 2009 by admin

Organizing tips for clutter controlI just love it when I get great organizing ideas from other professionals. This comes from Sherie Dodsworth of Securita. Securita is the company that developed the Porta Vault that I use and love for all my file organization for my important documents. It is the system that is an easy-to-use, comprehensive system which IDENTIFIES, ORGANIZES, STORES AND TRANSPORTS all of the important records and documents commonly found in a home.

Here is Sherie’s organizing idea:

“Have you ever locked your keys in the car? Does your car have remote keys? Then this tip may come in handy some day. ( I just found out this doesn’t really work).

If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home (or in another known location), call someone who can locate them.

Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the other person press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on the other end. Voila! Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you or having to call AAA. Distance is no object, you could be hundreds of miles away and if you can reach someone who has the other “remote” for your car, you can unlock the doors”.

I am so glad I asked Sherie if I could share this with my readers. She wrote back and said that Snopes.com said this is false. Have you heard something you wanted to check to see if it was true or false? Now you know where to go and you can share it with your friends. (That is why I didn’t change this blog).

We’d like to know your organizing tips and ideas! Please share you stories.

Product Review of Scentsy "un-candle"

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009 by admin

I am always on the lookout for organizing ideas to share with my readers and I am excited about this. It is called Scentsy. This is a fabulous way to have your home smell good and be safe at the same time.

Several months ago my daughter gave me a Scentsy “un-candle” (that is what I call it) and I love it. These are the reasons I love it and recommend it:

1. My home smells good when I use it. (Which is every day)
2. It is safe! It is safe to leave on all day, it is safe around children. My grandson stuck his finger in the wax and he pulled back quickly and looked at his finger when he felt the warm wax, it did not burn and he did not cry.
3. They come in wonderful styles to fit every room. This is the one I use in my family room. They just added plug in ones which I have on order. They also have ones for the car.

4. When ordering on line S/H is very reasonable—it is just 10% of the entire order. I really like that.
5. They are reasonably priced and the refills are cheap.
6. They fit into any decor and in any room.
7. It is easy to order on line at: www.scentsy.com/jschofield

We would love to hear what you think of this product.

6 Organizing Tips When Traveling By Car

Saturday, November 8th, 2008 by admin

Organizing tips for clutter controlI was driving to Colorado for a week to do some organizing. The car tires looked low so I went to a shop to have the tire pressure checked. I have been driving a long time and when the young man said let’s see how much air the tires need I started to reach for my drivers manual. It was news to me that I could find it in a more convenient place.

He opened the driver’s door and there on the car was a sticker that told how much air my tires needed. (In the U.S. that is a law for the sticker to be there). I had no idea it was so convenient. As he was checking the tires I thought what other organizing tips could I pass on?

If you are traveling by car here are a few organizing tips to get your car ready before leaving for your trip:

•Make sure tires are properly inflated—this improves gas mileage and safety.
•Clear clutter from the car—I know we all keep it clutter free, but check the side pockets on the door and under the seats just to make sure. Add additional bags for trash to use on the trip.
•Check the oil; keep one or two containers of oil in the trunk or back of the vehicle just in case you need it.
•Make sure you have a can of “fix a flat”. If you are caught in the middle of nowhere with a flat tire this can get you to the nearest station where you can get your tire fixed. This has saved me more than once.
•Put your 72 hour kit in the vehicle.
•Put your first aid kit in the car. Check it to make sure the first aid supplies have been resupplied if it has been used.

These organizing tips can give you peace of mind as you head out on a trip. We never expect to run into problems, but it is better to be safe than sorry.

What organizing tips have you used before leaving for a trip? Because you organized your car was your trip different and or better?
