Is Clearing Clutter Hard For You?

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012 by admin

“Life is hard by the yard, a cinch by the inch”.
—Wolfgang Mieda
I remember my mom used to tell me this when I would whine about doing something she had asked me to do (probably clean my room or get the dishes washed. I was so good at putting things off).

The quote today is from Wolfgang who is a professor at the University of Vermont according to Wikipedia.

Clearing clutter is hard to do all if we have the mindset that it all has to ALL be done right now!

When in truth when we do it a little at a time we don’t get burnt out and we look forward to clearing clutter another day. I’ve said it before and I am saying it again—set your timer when organizing and when it dings take a break and pat yourself on the back for what you have accomplished.

Is your arm tired from reaching back and patting yourself on the back? I hope so because I want you to constantly praise your efforts to clear clutter.

Monday Focus: Clearing Clutter The Easiest Way

Monday, May 7th, 2012 by admin

The last night I was at my daughter’s in Atlanta we had dinner with a couple of her friends. The conversation turned to clearing clutter as they knew I am an author of a book on clearing clutter and they talked about their dilemmas and successes.

One of the women shared the way she gets rid of clutter is to pick and chose what project or place is most important to her and to let the rest go until she has time to tackle it. She doesn’t feel sorry for herself or beat herself up for having clutter. She is super busy as a mother, graduate student and wife along with all the other things we as women tackle. Oh and she is also 7 months pregnant with a high risk pregnancy.

I thought what a great way to clear clutter—be choosy in the projects or places to clear clutter. When that is done, move on to another area.  And let go of the guilt for having clutter in the first place—life happens ya know.

That is our Monday challenge.  Thanks for sharing this idea with us Amy. What area are you going to tackle this week? I am going to continue to work on my in box on my desk.

Success And Failure–Overated?

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012 by admin

“Success and failure are greatly overrated. But failure gives you a whole lot more to talk about”.

—Hildegard Kinef

Isn’t this the truth? When our homes are neat and tidy there is no need to chat about clearing clutter because there is no clutter to chat about. Which would you rather do chat about it or clear clutter?

Actually I think failure sounds final but mistakes are healthy when we learn from them. When I was a child I took a glass jar that had some hard olvaltine (this is a sweet drink when mixed in milk) in the bottom of it. I took a long butcher knife and was chipping away at it when the knife slipped and I cut my knuckle. Blood was streaming out (from my perspective) as I ran screaming and crying to my mom who was a couple of blocks away and she bandaged it. I remember her gasping and was quite horrified that I had done this. To this day I have a scar from that mistake—but I learned never to do that with a knife again.

Whether we talk about clearing clutter or we actually clear clutter in entirely up to us. What do you feel like doing today?

4 Rock Solid Tips To Clear Clutter

Monday, April 9th, 2012 by admin

Monday’s Clear Clutter Focus:

My calendar tells me yesterday was Easter Monday in the U.S., Canada, the UK, Australia and NZ. I hope if you celebrated Easter that it was a beautiful and glorious day. Mine was as I spent the day with a daughter that I only see about once a year as we live on opposite sides of the country.

Now Easter is over it is time to put away the decorations. A simple way to clear clutter is to put away holiday decorations after the holiday is over. Or at least have a plan to put them away within a couple of weeks of the holiday being over. (That’s my plan because Easter was early and I enjoy my bunnies being out of their boxes a bit longer).

  • Keep only the decorations you enjoyed having out, donate the rest.
  • Repair any that are broken or have paint chipping etc.
  • Wrap fragile pieces in bubble wrap or tissue rather than just placing in a bin.
  • Clearly label the bin so you don’t have a mystery bins taking over.

How long do you wait to take down decorations after a holiday is over?

“If I’ve Told You Once, I’ve Told You A Thousand Times”

“If I’ve told you once I’ve told you a thousand times”
–Just about every mother I have ever known

Does getting your family to clear clutter seem like this to you? May I suggest a different idea? Teach, train, follow through and assist family members in learning how to clear clutter.

To us it may seem so simple—yet it must not be or we wouldn’t have to tell them a “thousand times”.

What has been your most successful idea on getting your family to clear clutter?

Clear Your Clutter With Crystal-Clear Organizer

Organizing Product Review Friday:

There are so many choices for shoe storage—I am sharing just one with you today.  This organizer is for 30-pairs of shoes.  I don’t even have half that many but for those with a lot of shoes this might be just the ticket.

I found this at the container store. It stores up to 30 pairs of women’s shoes or 15 pairs of men’s. (I guess theirs are bigger).

Secured at the top and bottom of the door as well as at the door knob, for exceptional stability.

It is regularly $39.99 but they do have sales for as much as $10.00 off. What a simple way to clear your shoe clutter.

Versatile Container Cleared Clutter In A Flash

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011 by admin

Today is the longest day of the year—(I just thought I would mention that today).

It’s never too late to clear clutter by using the right container. My daughter came home for Christmas and in the bathroom she put her eye contact “stuff” on the counter. I noticed it could easily fall into the trash basket that is below it.

I put them in a container for her—As you can see it is not fancy, but it does the trick. When you clear clutter by using containers you don’t have to wait to get the prettiest container, use what you have.

Now if she was going to be here for awhile I would probably provide an attractive container, but hey this works and she is happy to have everything contained.

What is the most unusual container you have used around your home?

Do You Have A Relationship With Clutter?

Thursday, October 20th, 2011 by admin

Picture this: I was organizing and clearing clutter with a woman and as I held up different items she would say yes to keep or no to get rid of it. I held up a small toy and she said (very quietly) no so I immediately threw it in the trash sack.

She laughed and said “You’re getting rid of it before I can develop a relationship with it aren’t you”? I thought this was profound. Don’t we do this with a lot of things?

We decide we don’t want it and then we sabotage our decision by feeling it and thinking about where we bought it and how we used it and who might like it and on and on and on.

When you have decided to clear clutter don’t develop a relationship with the clutter as that makes it 10 times harder to let go of it. What is your relationship like with your clutter?

Which Season Is The Best Time To Declutter Your Home?

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011 by admin

“Organizing is Ongoing, not a seasonal effort”

–Marilyn Bohn

I was reading something about something and whatever they said (I don’t remember) I changed it to this thought. As a professional organizer people (especially when I am being interviewed for an article) will say to me…”Isn’t January the best time to declutter your home because it is the new year? Or isn’t Spring the best time to clear clutter? Or isn’t the Fall the best time to get rid of clutter”?

The answer is NOPE—every day is the best day to declutter your home or get rid of clutter—however you want to say it. To stay organized it is the little things we do every day and decide not to keep or find a place to keep that item that keeps us organized.

Any thoughts?
