Is Clearing Clutter Hard For You?

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012 by admin

“Life is hard by the yard, a cinch by the inch”.
—Wolfgang Mieda
I remember my mom used to tell me this when I would whine about doing something she had asked me to do (probably clean my room or get the dishes washed. I was so good at putting things off).

The quote today is from Wolfgang who is a professor at the University of Vermont according to Wikipedia.

Clearing clutter is hard to do all if we have the mindset that it all has to ALL be done right now!

When in truth when we do it a little at a time we don’t get burnt out and we look forward to clearing clutter another day. I’ve said it before and I am saying it again—set your timer when organizing and when it dings take a break and pat yourself on the back for what you have accomplished.

Is your arm tired from reaching back and patting yourself on the back? I hope so because I want you to constantly praise your efforts to clear clutter.

Monday Focus: Clearing Clutter The Easiest Way

Monday, May 7th, 2012 by admin

The last night I was at my daughter’s in Atlanta we had dinner with a couple of her friends. The conversation turned to clearing clutter as they knew I am an author of a book on clearing clutter and they talked about their dilemmas and successes.

One of the women shared the way she gets rid of clutter is to pick and chose what project or place is most important to her and to let the rest go until she has time to tackle it. She doesn’t feel sorry for herself or beat herself up for having clutter. She is super busy as a mother, graduate student and wife along with all the other things we as women tackle. Oh and she is also 7 months pregnant with a high risk pregnancy.

I thought what a great way to clear clutter—be choosy in the projects or places to clear clutter. When that is done, move on to another area.  And let go of the guilt for having clutter in the first place—life happens ya know.

That is our Monday challenge.  Thanks for sharing this idea with us Amy. What area are you going to tackle this week? I am going to continue to work on my in box on my desk.

Clear Clutter with Professional Organizer Marilyn Bohn

Clearing Clutter In A Snap Without The Worry

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012 by admin

“When you stop worrying you free up energy that can be used more productively”.

—Tammy Cravit

My mother was a big worrier. She would worry that my brother came in late and had maybe been injured. She was a school teacher and worried about her students, she helped the girls in her class make 200 candied apples for every home town football game and she worried about having enough. You get the idea—she was a worrier, so much so I bought her a worry stone for her to rub her thumb back and forth on.

Maybe her example is why I am not a worrier. Instead of worrying about clearing clutter it is a lot more fun just clearing clutter. (Isn’t it?) As a professional organizer I find women worry about:

  • Clothes closets
  • Paper
  • Children’s toys and stuff
  • What to do with clutter when guests come

Do you have a “favorite” clutter problem you worry about? Or are you always clearing clutter instead of worrying about it? That is how we keep organized is to do a little at a time all the time and then it isn’t a daunting task at all.

Refreshing Look At Clearing Clutter

Clearing Clutter Show ‘N Share:

We went to a friend’s home for a few hours of sewing/quilting time and she showed us her beautiful sewing room and organized sewing closet.

She is very organized to say the least. Look at all of these containers labeled and stacked perfectly. Notice too that along with all her necessities she has included fun decorative items that light her up and make her happy.

Along with getting organized and clearing clutter always have things that light you up, make you happy and put a smile on your face and make you feel good.

Thank you Karen for sharing with us!

Just For Kicks Let’s Do Clutter Clearing

Monday, April 23rd, 2012 by admin

Monday’s Clutter Clearing Focus:

Costco has this delicious trail mix that has nuts, yogurt buds (I am not sure what they really are it is just delicious), raisins and chocolate chips. Our local store was out of it so as I was leaving for work I left the phone number of another store for my daughter to call to see if they have it.

The number didn’t work and it is the one I had in my planner. I checked on line and called the number listed there and sure enough I had the wrong number written down.

How are the phone numbers you have? Are they all up to date or do you have so many cross outs it is hard to see which one is the right number to call? I am sure guilty of this one. Right now I just updated my address book and my goal is to keep it clean and readable! (I hope it lasts forever—I am such a dreamer).

The older my book gets I need help clearing clutter in my address book—how about you? Do any of you use electronic address books? If so do you have to do clutter clearing on them or do they stay clutter free?

Success And Failure–Overated?

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012 by admin

“Success and failure are greatly overrated. But failure gives you a whole lot more to talk about”.

—Hildegard Kinef

Isn’t this the truth? When our homes are neat and tidy there is no need to chat about clearing clutter because there is no clutter to chat about. Which would you rather do chat about it or clear clutter?

Actually I think failure sounds final but mistakes are healthy when we learn from them. When I was a child I took a glass jar that had some hard olvaltine (this is a sweet drink when mixed in milk) in the bottom of it. I took a long butcher knife and was chipping away at it when the knife slipped and I cut my knuckle. Blood was streaming out (from my perspective) as I ran screaming and crying to my mom who was a couple of blocks away and she bandaged it. I remember her gasping and was quite horrified that I had done this. To this day I have a scar from that mistake—but I learned never to do that with a knife again.

Whether we talk about clearing clutter or we actually clear clutter in entirely up to us. What do you feel like doing today?

Thrill To Simplicity in Clearing Clutter

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012 by admin

“Order is a lovely thing,

On disarray it lays its wing,

Teaching simplicity to sing”.

—Anna Branch

I freely admit I am not a big fan of poetry but I thought this was beautiful. I don’t read poetry because frankly I don’t understand a lot of it and I don’t want to take the time to figure it out. I missed poetry classes in high school because I took journalism where I learned about Greek mythology (which I love) instead of poetry in English classes. So…my poetry skills are sorely lacking.

Order is a lovely thing and clearing clutter gives simplicity to homes and our lives. It is like a gift we give to ourselves and those around us.

Clearing clutter simplifies our lives by bring us peace, power and purpose. What does it bring to your life?

4 Tips To Keep Organized and Clear Clutter

Show ‘N Share Clearing Clutter Tuesday: (Day 5 of 5 showing clutter in my home)

I know, I know some women have complained that what I have been showing isn’t a lot of clutter—to me everything I have shown is clutter because things either didn’t have homes or weren’t put away where they belong (I had a photo to show you but due to fun filled photo editing problems I can’t show it … but the ducks are cute right?)

In my little bathroom there were a few things left on the counter that could quickly become lots of things if I allowed clutter to accumulate. This is the key to keeping organized:

•Decide what you want your space to look like
•Put things away after using them
•Teach your family what it means to be organized
•Clear clutter while it is small, don’t wait until it is in huge piles

Clearing clutter is sooooo much easier and faster if it isn’t allowed to gather friends and have babies.

Clearing Clutter Is A Major Stressor–True Or False

Clearing clutter Show ‘N Share Tuesday (Day 3 of 5 showing clutter in my home)

Some have told me, “You are brave to show that you have clutter in your home being a professional organizer and all”. (What do you think “and all” means)? Anyway, again, I am not perfect, one thing for sure I do not let clutter pile up and live for long but I do get clutter creep sometimes.

This is a place I am constantly and I do mean constantly clearing clutter. I had it all nice and tidy because we took a 2 day trip to Las Vegas a couple of weeks ago and I had everything put away, then I got home and I have let the receipts “live” on my desk for a few days. It is just so easy to do.

If I took a photo today of my desk after my 10 minutes of clearing clutter you would see a nice and tidy desk. Clutter comes and clutter goes. Do you have the same experience with clutter in your home?

“What Should I Be But Just What I AM”?

Edna St. Vincent Millay“What should I be but just what I am”?
—Edna St. Vincent Millay

Be your best at whatever you do. I was clearing clutter from the living room and I thought I would come back and finish later when I remembered my mother saying “if a job is worth doing it is worth doing well”. And besides when would I have time to finish if it wasn’t right then.

Do you ever find yourself clearing clutter and you stop right in the middle of it just because you want to—not because there is something else you need to do? This can be an avoidance behavior or just a bad habit. Do you ever do this? And if so what do you tell yourself to finish the task and what gets you motivated to finish?
