When Was The Last Time You Decluttered A Closet?

I opened my hall closet and right away I knew I needed to declutter! Now this is the closet I reorganize about every 3 months. (And I have shown you every time). I kept thinking of Edna’s mother (a faithful blog reader—you may know her from her comments). Edna would ask her mother why she was organizing a place she had already organized. Her mom would say what I say, “Because I can make it better”.

Decluttering a home is a way of life. We can keep organized by improving on areas that we aren’t satisfied with.  I think this time this closet will be organized for a long time because I was finally able to get rid of things I never use. Why on earth I have hung on to them is a mystery to me. Now was the right time to let them go.

I keep my tools here in a box and I went through them just to see what I have as a refresher and organized the container with nails, picture hangers and other sundry things.

I like bags but they were cluttering this closet. I got rid of everything in one of the drawers and put some bags I use most often there. I also got rid of 8 paper bags that are for gift wrapping that I know I will never use.

It must have been a good day for me as I was able to get rid of things. If you have clutter you can’t seem to let go of, yet you want to let go, declutter on a different day and see if that works better for you. Or even a different time of day.

What have you decluttered lately? Do you find the day makes a difference to you?

What Is The Best Hanger To Use?

This is beautiful organization of all the fruits and things at the Farmer’s Market near where we live. That is the one thing and only thing about summer coming to an end I will miss, no more fresh produce direct from the growers. I will be so happy when this blasted heat is gone and I am complaining about the cold. Actually I love the cold.

I organized a walk-in closet for a lovely woman last week. It really was very organized and functional by the time I finished, sorry no photo—it inspired me to share some tips on closet organizing with you:

  • When organizing your closet face the clothes all one way—the way you will look at them when choosing an article. It not only makes it look nice, it makes it easier and faster to select what you want to wear.
  • Use all the same type and color of hangers. This visually gives your closet an organized appearance.

What type of hangers are your favorites? I prefer the wooden ones for most clothes and those felty/fuzzy ones for slippery items.

Organizing Product Adds Closet Space

Closet Organizing Product Review:

I was organizing with a delightful woman last week when she asked me what I thought of these. (See the photo). I said, “Let’s try it”.  We had just finished organizing her closet so it was easy to take some hangers and hang them from this and then hang it back in the closet. It did save rod space and it was still easy to see what clothes were hanging from it.

Then we took her scarfs and hung them from another one of these organizing products.

I think when space is limited this is a nifty organizing product. She said she got it from a TV ad or maybe a variety store. She didn’t remember how much they were, but I thought it was a great product and I wanted to share it with you in case you came across them and wondered if they worked or not. Thank you for sharing with us Amanda.

Have you used them? If so do you know where you got them and the cost? Today is Friday the 13th–are you superstitious?

Shoes: Friend Or Foe?

Monday, June 4th, 2012 by admin

Monday’s Focus:

Shoes: How about your shoes? Do they need clutter control? Do they need repairing? Do then need to be recycled or tossed?

Did you know to get rid of the stinky smell in sneakers you put them in the freezer for 24 hours and the odor disappears? I used to do this with my girls gym shoes and it actually works.

Shoe clutter control is easy when:

  • Shoes are kept in good repair so you can wear them anytime
  • You like the shoes you have, if you don’t like them you won’t wear them
  • You have something to wear with them, if you have gotten rid of the outfit the shoes went with and have nothing else to go with them, donate them

I organized for a woman who just one year ago had 433 pairs of shoes and she called them her friends. Some of us like shoes more than others; I think I have about 14. I admit I need to go shopping for another pair of hiking boots for the summer. Because I only keep the shoes I actually wear clutter control is easy when it comes to my shoes.

UK Reader Sends Clutter Tip From Across The Pond

Monday’s Get Rid Of Clutter Focus:

A faithful blog reader from the UK, Alastair Street, sent me this idea on a way to get rid of clutter once and for all (is that possible?) in your closet.

“I just wanted to share an idea that one of my friends gave me: Sometimes your wardrobe can be full of clothes that you never wear, simply take an empty hanger and hang it on the very right side of the wardrobe. Then when you have worn an item from within the wardrobe, you hang it on the other side of the empty hanger.

Then when (it) comes Summer or Winter any clothes that are on the left side of the hanger you can rid of. I have gotten rid of loads of clothes this way and it is effective to know what you actually wear”.

Thank you Alastair for sharing this with us! I love when others pass on their great ideas—don’t you? This is something I have never heard of or thought about before. Try this clever idea on how to get rid of clutter and let us know if it worked for you.

Cheap Product To Clear Your Clutter

Organizing Product Review for Clearing Clutter:

This product is cheap (I don’t even feel like I have to use the word inexpensive) as you can buy them at the dollar store for—that’s right one dollar.

I was working with a friend who was just moving into a home and we were organizing her closet. She had several scarfs but no scarf hanger. All of a sudden she said “I know what we can use—shower curtain rings”. And we did.

I think this is a clever product to use to hang scarves from. They can also be hung on the closet rod its self if you have enough room in your closet. What a simple yet effective way to clear your clutter. If you have a drawer full of scarves that are all scrambled you know what kind of clutter I am talking about. Or you can’t find just the one you need when you want it.

How do you store/organize your scarves?

Carefree Cotton For Clutter Control

Friday, February 10th, 2012 by admin

Organizing Product Review:

If you have an important dress you have inherited or have worn yourself—such as a wedding dress—it needs to be protected and not stored in plastic which sweats. Cotton is what you need to hang it in.

This is the right organizing product to protect the cloth and also to protect it from a metal zipper that can get rust stains on the fabric.

This what they say: Our 100% unbleached Cotton Storage Bags are the best choice for storing your clothes – especially those made of leather, fur or natural fibers – because cotton breathes. Designed to our superior standards, they feature 9 ounce cotton twill (which wears better and stitches more securely than the 6 ounce version you see elsewhere), plus self-healing zippers and epoxy-coated hooks.

I know people who have their wedding dress preserved in acid free boxes but I like looking at mine sometimes and my girls had a lot of fun trying it on.

Clear Your Clutter With Crystal-Clear Organizer

Friday, January 13th, 2012 by admin

Organizing Product Review Friday:

There are so many choices for shoe storage—I am sharing just one with you today.  This organizer is for 30-pairs of shoes.  I don’t even have half that many but for those with a lot of shoes this might be just the ticket.

I found this at the container store. It stores up to 30 pairs of women’s shoes or 15 pairs of men’s. (I guess theirs are bigger).

Secured at the top and bottom of the door as well as at the door knob, for exceptional stability.

It is regularly $39.99 but they do have sales for as much as $10.00 off. What a simple way to clear your shoe clutter.

Hanging Purse Organizer Saves The Day

Product Review:

Maximize vertical space in your closet. I love my purse organizer that hangs in my closet and I was bummed when I couldn’t find another one a couple of years ago. I just found one at the Container Store http://www.containerstore.com/shop/closet/accessoryStorage/handbags?productId=10026837.

This has organized my handbags and other bags for years. It has cleared clutter from my floor and all my bags are easy to get to, to put back and to see.

I highly recommend this product. The container store has patterned ones, mine is just plain. I know Bed Bath and Beyond has plain ones. I hang mine in my closet from a nail but at one time I hung it on the back of a door.

It costs about $20.00 unless you find it on sale or use a coupon.
