UK Reader Sends Clutter Tip From Across The Pond

Monday’s Get Rid Of Clutter Focus:

A faithful blog reader from the UK, Alastair Street, sent me this idea on a way to get rid of clutter once and for all (is that possible?) in your closet.

“I just wanted to share an idea that one of my friends gave me: Sometimes your wardrobe can be full of clothes that you never wear, simply take an empty hanger and hang it on the very right side of the wardrobe. Then when you have worn an item from within the wardrobe, you hang it on the other side of the empty hanger.

Then when (it) comes Summer or Winter any clothes that are on the left side of the hanger you can rid of. I have gotten rid of loads of clothes this way and it is effective to know what you actually wear”.

Thank you Alastair for sharing this with us! I love when others pass on their great ideas—don’t you? This is something I have never heard of or thought about before. Try this clever idea on how to get rid of clutter and let us know if it worked for you.

Cheap Product To Clear Your Clutter

Organizing Product Review for Clearing Clutter:

This product is cheap (I don’t even feel like I have to use the word inexpensive) as you can buy them at the dollar store for—that’s right one dollar.

I was working with a friend who was just moving into a home and we were organizing her closet. She had several scarfs but no scarf hanger. All of a sudden she said “I know what we can use—shower curtain rings”. And we did.

I think this is a clever product to use to hang scarves from. They can also be hung on the closet rod its self if you have enough room in your closet. What a simple yet effective way to clear your clutter. If you have a drawer full of scarves that are all scrambled you know what kind of clutter I am talking about. Or you can’t find just the one you need when you want it.

How do you store/organize your scarves?

Carefree Cotton For Clutter Control

Organizing Product Review:

If you have an important dress you have inherited or have worn yourself—such as a wedding dress—it needs to be protected and not stored in plastic which sweats. Cotton is what you need to hang it in.

This is the right organizing product to protect the cloth and also to protect it from a metal zipper that can get rust stains on the fabric.

This what they say: Our 100% unbleached Cotton Storage Bags are the best choice for storing your clothes – especially those made of leather, fur or natural fibers – because cotton breathes. Designed to our superior standards, they feature 9 ounce cotton twill (which wears better and stitches more securely than the 6 ounce version you see elsewhere), plus self-healing zippers and epoxy-coated hooks.

I know people who have their wedding dress preserved in acid free boxes but I like looking at mine sometimes and my girls had a lot of fun trying it on.

Clear Your Clutter With Crystal-Clear Organizer

Friday, January 13th, 2012 by admin

Organizing Product Review Friday:

There are so many choices for shoe storage—I am sharing just one with you today.  This organizer is for 30-pairs of shoes.  I don’t even have half that many but for those with a lot of shoes this might be just the ticket.

I found this at the container store. It stores up to 30 pairs of women’s shoes or 15 pairs of men’s. (I guess theirs are bigger).

Secured at the top and bottom of the door as well as at the door knob, for exceptional stability.

It is regularly $39.99 but they do have sales for as much as $10.00 off. What a simple way to clear your shoe clutter.

Hanging Purse Organizer Saves The Day

Product Review:

Maximize vertical space in your closet. I love my purse organizer that hangs in my closet and I was bummed when I couldn’t find another one a couple of years ago. I just found one at the Container Store http://www.containerstore.com/shop/closet/accessoryStorage/handbags?productId=10026837.

This has organized my handbags and other bags for years. It has cleared clutter from my floor and all my bags are easy to get to, to put back and to see.

I highly recommend this product. The container store has patterned ones, mine is just plain. I know Bed Bath and Beyond has plain ones. I hang mine in my closet from a nail but at one time I hung it on the back of a door.

It costs about $20.00 unless you find it on sale or use a coupon.

Clearing Clutter Is Drop-Dead-Cool

Show ‘N Share Clearing Clutter Tuesday:

I just don’t get it! Clearing clutter in this closet is a constant battle. About ever six months it is overflowing—as you can see. It is my closet that holds my bags (actually I have gotten rid of 18 at least in the last year). I also use it as my gift closet and wrapping paper closet.

Last week I decided yet again to clear clutter so I can open the door and find what I need. It took me almost 3 hours to get it organized like I wanted it    a-g-a-i-n. 30 minutes of that time was spent deciding what to do with all the stuff. And I took a lot of breaks and I had a lovely lunch.

Three of the drawers were full of wrapping supplies. I evaluated if I really needed this much space. The answer was no so I put the supplies I use most often in one drawer only. I put the extra in short term storage in a drawer in another room and I recycled bags I know I will never use.

I corralled all the gifts into bags and in the drawers. I think maybe I need to place a container on top to hold gifts—I will experiment with that idea soon. I used my purse/bag holder for my bags. I kept the ones I use most often on side hooks to make them easy to grab.

What do you think? Do any of these ideas help you with clearing clutter in one of your closets or other space in your home?

Clutter Control Product Review:

I wish I looked good in baseball caps but I don’t. How about you? I just don’t know what it is about them on me but on other people they look so cute.

I like the catalogs I get this time of year because I get some good gift ideas out of them. And it gets me in the mood to shop for Christmas. My neighbor said last week that her sister has all of her gifts bought and wrapped. I can’t even imagine that—I don’t want to even imagine it.

Back to hats—I saw this hat storage bag and I thought those of you who have a lot of baseball caps and want to control clutter would find this interesting and maybe something you need. It was in the Current catalog. This bag would keep them contained and dust free. It sells for $8.00. Plus you can see inside it. I like the handles as it would be portable.

I control clutter with the hats I have by containing them in a basket. My hats are for cold weather—for hiking, walking and skiing. How do you control hat clutter?

Head-Turning Closet Idea For Clutter Clearing

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011 by admin

My friend told me when she was in high school she had a limited wardrobe. She would mix and match her clothes so it looked like she had more than she had.  (Such a clever girl at such a young age).

She put these little tabs that are on bread wrappers on the hangers of the clothes she wore. She could see at a glance how often she had worn each article of clothing.

Thank you for sharing this with us Heather—now you are all grown you are still clever.

How do you tell how often you have worn your clothes? Do you find you need to do some clutter clearing in your closet because there are some you never wear?

Clutter In Your Closet?

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011 by admin

We were foster parents of a little orange kitty for a few days and we quickly grew to love him. They didn’t have toys for him so I rolled up little balls of newspaper and he loved chasing and batting them around. He would put them in his mouth and carry them to the room he wanted to play in. We were sad when his real parents came and took him back to their home.

We have one kitty of our own who is a princess. She was very upset to have another kitty in her space. Now that she is the only kitty getting all the attention she is back to her happy contented self.

Are you upset by clutter in your closet or somewhere else in your home and as soon as you clear it out you are again your happy contented self? On Tuesday one of my students said the reason she wanted to be organized was to be happy. For some reason clutter just makes us upset, jittery and sometimes out of sorts don’t you think?

What do you do when you start feeling this way about clutter in your home? Wouldn’t it be nice if someone could just come in and take it all away—or would that be nice?
