UK Reader Sends Clutter Tip From Across The Pond

Monday’s Get Rid Of Clutter Focus:

A faithful blog reader from the UK, Alastair Street, sent me this idea on a way to get rid of clutter once and for all (is that possible?) in your closet.

“I just wanted to share an idea that one of my friends gave me: Sometimes your wardrobe can be full of clothes that you never wear, simply take an empty hanger and hang it on the very right side of the wardrobe. Then when you have worn an item from within the wardrobe, you hang it on the other side of the empty hanger.

Then when (it) comes Summer or Winter any clothes that are on the left side of the hanger you can rid of. I have gotten rid of loads of clothes this way and it is effective to know what you actually wear”.

Thank you Alastair for sharing this with us! I love when others pass on their great ideas—don’t you? This is something I have never heard of or thought about before. Try this clever idea on how to get rid of clutter and let us know if it worked for you.

4 Nifty Ideas To Get Rid Of Paper Clutter

Monday, April 30th, 2012 by admin

Monday’s Paper Clutter Focus:

Thank you cards

When you read this what did you think? Do you still receive them? Do you need to keep all the ones you have? Are you selective in the ones you keep? Do you have a pile of them and have they become clutter? Are they taking up too much space in your drawers, cupboards or where ever?

It can be so hard to get rid of the clutter of thank you notes we receive. I recommend:

  • Keep a select and special few
  • Designate a home for them
  • Keep the note, not the envelope
  • Transfer the address from the envelope into your address book

What do you do with thank you notes? I LOVE to get them but I realize I don’t have to keep them all, I will do something nice for someone again and if I am lucky I will get a new note.

Multi-Task When Getting Rid Of Clutter?

Monday’s Getting Rid of Clutter Focus:

Did you know Monday’s focus is a focus for the entire week? It does not have to be done all in one day.

Do you try to get rid of clutter while watching TV? or talking on the phone or while doing something else that is distracting? There is a time and a place to multi-task and getting rid of clutter can be one of those times—or not.

Our focus this week is to take 30 minutes or one hour while you get rid of clutter and focus on only that instead of being distracted.

What made me think of this is me. (I’m so funny) I am finishing my grandmother’s flower garden quilt. I am sewing the edge (by hand as all the rest of the quilt has been sewn by hand) and it is tedious, a bit hard and sometimes boring. I “watch” TV (more like listening to it) while I work on the edge. The other morning (at 5:20 a.m.) I didn’t turn on the TV but instead focused on doing just the edge.

I got twice as much done in less time than when I have the TV on. I keep telling myself, just one hour a day is all I have to work on it to get it done—and just like getting rid of clutter it is getting done, doing it a little at a time. I will soon be able to show you my completed quilt—after 20 years in the making. (I’ll show ‘n share all about it when it is done).

Only once this week focus on getting rid of clutter ONLY without TV or talking on the phone or whatever distracts you (well, music is a good thing if you like to listen and organize). Please let us know how you do as far as getting more done in less time—the bonus is then you can watch your program instead of just listening. Or get rid of more clutter.

Instant Stuffed Animals Storage Solution

Getting Rid of Clutter Product Review:

Here is another clever organizing tip to get rid of clutter which is very inexpensive:

Attach a Velcro strip to the wall to attach soft toys to. I am always being asked “how do I store stuffed animals”? This is a clever way to decorate the walls and get the toys out of the way. Several strips could be attached one above the other.

Velcro is a brand name but any hook and loop tape would work. Buy it at a hardware or fabric store.

HAPPY St. Patrick’s Day to you tomorrow. Be sure to wear the green to avoid being pinched. Does your country have this tradition?

Simplified Solution To Get Rid Of Paper Clutter

Product Review:

As you know I do products reviews every Friday. Today I am asking you what kind of product have you been looking for and can’t find? My readers from near and far can maybe point you in the right direction to find what you are looking for.

For the next few weeks I am sharing some fun ideas that cost very little.

To get rid of wrapping paper clutter attach two wires from side to side to contain rolls. In this photo they have done it on the ceiling rather than cluttering the floor (their words, not mine).

I don’t see why the rolls don’t fall right down, but there you have it. It would work beautifully on the floor of a closet if you have the room.

Do you have a clever wrapping paper solution to get rid of wrapping paper clutter?

Get Rid Of Clutter Product Review:

This is the coolest product—I was in my client’s home and we were chatting about organizing solutions for her cluttered closet. (Her words, not mine). She said she knew she needed to get rid of the clutter but didn’t know what to do with all the things that needed to be kept in the closet such as back packs her children brought home from school.

This is the solution she came up with, a back pack rack from Amazon. I declare if someone needs an organizing product all they have to do is search and low and behold there will be a solution to get rid of clutter. I didn’t even know this was ‘out there’, thank you Rebekah.

New Book Name Announced

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012 by admin

In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who would be their Valentine. They would wear this name pinned onto their sleeves for one week for everyone to see. This was the origin of the expression “to wear your heart on your sleeve.”

Do you have clutter “pinned to your sleeve?” I do sometimes—my desk becomes such a mess that I shy away from coming into my office and creating blogs and doing other things I need to get done. Why is it so hard to get rid of clutter when it is such an easy thing to do?

By the way I just found out that is the name of my new book: “Easy Organizing” 365 tips. It is a fantastic reference book on how to organize everything in your home. This is a little surprise—it actually has a bonus of 20 more tips so there are really 385 tips. Ta-Da!!! I will be talking more about this later.

I want you to know I came into my office at 5:30 a.m. last week and spent 1 ½ hours getting my desk free of clutter. Boy-oh-boy-oh boy does it feel and look good!

Do you have a place you need to work on to get rid of clutter? Or am I the only one?

Nifty Organizing Product To Get Rid Of Clutter

Saturday, January 21st, 2012 by admin

I just spend 12 days in Colorado at my daughter’s home. As I stepped into her entry way it looked different than I had seen it before. She had gotten rid of a lot of shoe clutter. This is the product she used to get rid of clutter. It is from IKEA.  They have several different styles. If you want to get rid of shoe clutter check these out this and other organizers at IKEA.

In the past she had a basket for shoes to go in and then a rack on the floor. But no matter what she tried they became scattered and “clutterly” (is that a word?) looking.

Her entry way is so inviting now.  She put the boots in a nearby closet and they only use this shoes they use every day.

This is a great organizing product and it is so charming I wish I had a place for it in my home.

What do you use at your front door to corral shoes? You can send me a photo if you want and I will post it on a future blog.

P.S. The winners who shared their stories with us are Edna and Pantha. Check your mail boxes—I am sending you a little surprise for sharing your story with us—thank you.

P.S.S. I don’t know what happened to yesterday’s blog—only one line showed up.  HUM  I will post it next week again and hope that it all shows up.

Feel-Good Way To Get Rid Of Clutter

“Now there are more overweight people in America than average-weight people. So overweight people are now average… which means, you have met your New Year’s resolution”?— Jay Leno

(Does this make you laugh or what?)

There is so much talk about New Year’s resolutions flying about in magazines and on T.V. Have you made any resolutions for the New Year? I prefer to think of them as goals. Did you make a goal to get rid of clutter this year? Follow my blog and newsletter this year and you will get a plethora of ideas on how to get rid of clutter forever.

One suggestion I have is to set goals by month. Instead of starting the year with the burden of several goals at once assign each goal a month that you will start working on a specific goal. Last year I made three goals, one started in January, one in June and one in August. I reached each goal.  As soon as I set my goals this year I will share them with you.

Getting rid of clutter is a long term goal as I do it constantly so I don’t actually make that an actual goal. How do you make goals?  What have you found successful?
