Is Clutter “Stinking” Up Your Home?

Monday, June 10th, 2013 by admin

Monday Focus:

Last week we spent 5 glorious days in the Northwest. The ocean waves lulled us to sleep every night and awakened us slowly in the morning. I was surprised that we could see the white caps of the waves at night. Other times when we have been on the ocean we couldn’t see anything. Needless to say it was gorgeous.

There were smells on the ocean we weren’t used to, but we mostly ignored them as we focused on the beauty of the water, the flowers and the most gracious people we met.

In our homes maybe it is time to actually focus on clutter that is bothering us rather than ignoring it and looking for just the organized spaces.

Of course we want to look for the best, but this week scope out a place that you feel needs to be organized. I did this when I came home and I will show it to you tomorrow for my show ‘n share. It felt so liberating to get rid of clutter.

How much clutter do you think you will get rid of this week?

Clutter Clearing Handbook Extrodinaire

“We see them come,

We see them go.

Some are fast,

And some are slow.

Some are high. And some are low.

Not one of them

is like another.

Don’t ask us why,

Go ask your mother.”

—Dr. Seuss

I thought this cute thought from “One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish” fit us all.

We all have different clutter and different clutter problems. That is why I wrote my second book. “The Easy Organizer”. I had the thought one day that most of my clients ask the same type of questions and wouldn’t it be nice if they had a handbook when I wasn’t with them to refer to to answer their organizing questions.

Of course nothing can replace me but it is a great resource. Some of us organize fast, some slow—either way is A-O.K.

Not one of us is like the other but we all are of one mind, we want to be organized and get rid of clutter.

Don’tchathink? Or what do you think?

4 Hot Clutter ClearingTips In The Pantry

Tuesday, May 21st, 2013 by admin

Show “N Share Tuesday

This is the second in the series of three on a pantry. By the way—pantry doesn’t mean only food is stored here. A pantry can be used as overflow for things that are used in the kitchen but there isn’t room in the cupboards.

This very long room was cluttered to the point that it was barely useable. It was easy to get rid of clutter and organize once we had a goal in mind. As you know that is the second thing to do when organizing—establish some goals.

There were canning supplies everywhere and we enlisted her husband to put all canning supplies in short term storage which was on the very top shelf. Since these items are only used once a year the top shelf is the ideal storage space.

Getting rid of clutter also meant putting things in other places in their home that didn’t belong here. Boxes of good things went to a thrift store as they hadn’t used them in years or they had duplicates and didn’t need them.

Getting rid of clutter became easier and easier as progress was made and the energy shifted in the room.  The energy at first was stifled and low. As we shifted things around and put likes together the energy was lighter and happier.

Space was made for items used on a regular basis and the shelves will be labeled so when something is used up the space will be “saved” for new things that belong there.

How big is your pantry? Do you need to get rid of clutter in yours? How long has it been since you revisited this space after it was organized—or has it never been organized like you like it?

This week I suggest you focus on doing than one area. Maybe it is one pile of paper, a closet shelf or the bathroom. The first step to getting rid of clutter is to chose a place and then make a goal to organize it and then get going.

What place are you choosing to get rid of clutter—share with us so we too can be inspired. I have some fabric that needs to be put away from projects I did over the weekend so that is my focus.

Do You Have A “Junk Bunker”?

Monday, March 18th, 2013 by admin

Monday Getting Rid of Clutter Focus

As my mailman was delivering a package to our door I stepped out onto the porch to say hi. He told me he had read that I was teaching organizing classes in a couple of weeks at the community school.

He then told me a story of his about getting rid of clutter. He said he came from a family of hoarders but his wife is completely opposite and organizes everything. They had a rack in the garage that held oil and various other things. She said it had to go as it was just a “junk bunker”.

I have never heard of a “junk Bunker”.  Have you?  Do you maybe have one and don’t know it?

They got rid of the clutter on the bunker by throwing away, recycling things not used and consolidating other items.

This week take a look around and see if you have a “junk bunker”.  What does yours look like? I’m going to take a look around my house this week to see if I have one.

Sunny Product Review On “The Easy Organizer”

Organizing Product Review:

My loyal blog reader and friend bought my book and has told everyone she can about it. When she offered to write a review for my blog I jumped at the chance. One day she was in Joann’s Crafts and when she saw a woman looking through my book she immediately told her how terrific it is…based on her personal experience.

Edna wrote:

There are so many great things about her book “The Easy Organizer”. It is so user friendly. You can if you want read each and every page in order, OR by looking at the first page of each chapter there she lists each tip she will elaborate in that chapter.

However, I like how you can view the book if you have a question, and can find it in her book by looking at the list on first page of each chapter, and then reading her suggestions. For example, the other day I was looking at my recipes I have collected for some time. The thought came to me to see what Marilyn says about organizing recipes. Yep, Chapter 5 tip #118. There was not only 1 idea, but 2 ideas on how I could organize my recipes. It is amazing how it felt like she was next to me telling me her ideas and letting me choose which one would work for me.

Marilyn’s book is a fun, and very resourceful tool to have around, be it a young homemaker or a seasoned homemaker. Her ideas are very doable, inventive, for everyone.

Thank you Edna for taking your time to write this review.

3 Simple As Pie Tips To Get Rid Of Clutter

Monday, January 7th, 2013 by admin

Monday  Focus:

Welcome back to Monday’s Focus. For a couple of years now I have suggested a focus to get rid of clutter for the week, month or however long it takes. Each and every one I have personally focused on, some have taken me more time to accomplish than others—how about you?

Which focus during this past year has been most meaningful to you in getting rid of clutter? Is it one that took a lot of time or a little bit of time? The ones that come to mind for me that I “worked on” are:

  • Putting just one piece of clutter away in every room. I found I put away more than one but giving myself permission to just put away one piece was liberating to me.
  • Using my sample cosmetics. I had several little packets that had become clutter as they just took up space. They are now all gone. (Does that mean it is time to go shopping?)
  • Being aware of putting things away instead of just putting them down. Just yesterday I found a blank envelope and I took it to the place it goes and tossed it in the drawer. I thought of my focus, opened the drawer and put it in the container where it belongs.

It is the simple things that help us get rid of clutter.

What focus(s) were most helpful to you in getting rid of clutter?

Tuesday’s Show ‘N Share:

I know, I know you have seen my desk before but I just had to say….I love having company. When I know they are coming I can organize and clean in record time—how about you? What motivates you to get rid of clutter?

I have company here from North Carolina (YEAH, we have had so much fun). To tell the truth my desk was ,messy and my in box was brimming with paper. Yahoosie for our friends coming for a visit because I got rid of clutter in record time.

I filed papers, I recycled old things (leave them long enough and you don’t have to take action if you know-what-I-mean). But don’t make that a habit. I am sorta laughing as I say this and I know you can relate. I also wrote in my planner the days I am going to take care of the other paper work in my in box.

It not only looks good, I feel much better knowing I am on top of things and my desk has looked nice for an entire week now.  How does your desk look?

Essential Tips To Get Organized

Monday, July 23rd, 2012 by admin

Monday Getting Organized Focus:

When I am out and about I often hear mothers tell their children to focus on what they are doing. In the grocery store it is to focus on not bumping into others carts, in the library it is to use their indoor voices when talking.

Focusing helps us in getting organized. What are your goals to be organized? Have you thought about that lately? This week review your goals, or set some new ones. (Not more than 3). Write your goals down in an organizing journal. For those who organize with me, pull out the one I gave you at our first ‘visit’.

Getting organized starts with us focusing on what we want to organize rather than just saying “I need to get organized”.

White-Hot Resolutions For Clearing Clutter

Monday, January 31st, 2011 by admin

The question I have been asking myself is: do I make New Year’s Resolutions? Here it is the last day of January and I have read this and that about making them and the percentage of those that break them. I am still wishy-washy on the subject. To do or not to do, that is the question.

Then I realized I did set two goals for this New Year, I just don’t call them resolutions. The first one is to keep writing articles, blogs, producing my web show and top quality visual workshops on clutter clearing , clutter control, how to declutter your home, and getting organized.  So far, so good, I have done all of these things this month. Hurrah!

The second one is to finish one project a month from the stacks (over 30 I am sure) in my closet and drawers that I have started in my quilting “career”. You probably know my passions are to organize (no surprise there) and to quilt. This month I did 10 projects. Four of these were “old” projects. Hurrah! It sure feels good.

And of course along the way I have done a lot of clutter clearing in my own home and in several other women’s homes this month.

So….have you decided to make some goals for the New Year? Have they included clearing clutter or getting organized? If so, make my site your organizing destination for tips and ideas and fun times for getting organized.
