3 Tips To Get Rid Of What’s Bugging You

Monday, May 20th, 2013 by admin

Monday’s Get Rid of Clutter Focus:

What has been bugging you? Is there some place you need to get rid of clutter and it has been on your mind to do but just haven’t done it?

This week I suggest you focus on doing than one area. Maybe it is one pile of paper, a closet shelf or the bathroom. The first step to getting rid of clutter is to chose a place and then make a goal to organize it and then get going.

What place are you choosing to get rid of clutter—share with us so we too can be inspired. I have some fabric that needs to be put away from projects I did over the weekend so that is my focus.

Invaluable Tips To Clear Clutter

Monday’s Clear Clutter Focus:

I read an excellent book last week — Gifted Hands, the Ben Carson story. The last two paragraphs in the book read:

“If we choose to see the obstacles as hurdles, we can leap over them. Successful people don’t have fewer problems. They have determined that nothing will stop them from going forward.

Whatever direction we choose, if we can realize that every hurdle we jump strengthens and prepares us for the next one, we’re already on the way to success.”

This week as you assess clutter in your home and are determined to get rid of clutter for whatever reason—maybe to be able to find that important piece of paper without searching, no more hassle in getting ready for the day in the morning or to have 10 extra minutes to do what you want to do—think of those pockets of clutter as hurdles that you can jump over.

Do you think obstacles can strengthen and prepare us for other things if chose to let them?

The Fun Begins With Revisiting Spaces—

Monday’s Focus:

As you know—or not—Monday’s focus is a focus for the week, not just for one single day, in fact we may focus on just one clutter clearing focus for weeks. I say this for those of you who are new to my blogs—WELCOME.

As you may or may not know I taught several classes on organizing last week. In the first of each class someone asked me if they could come to my home and look in my closets. Without hesitation I gave a resounding Yes.

When I went home I checked several closets and cupboards to see if they were as organized as I thought they were. I call this “revisiting spaces” which is our focus this week. Even though something is organized we can make it better or at the very least refresh our memory of what we have.

I was surprised to find a curling iron tucked under a shelf. I am glad to know it is there. I think it is o.k. to have a spare on hand in case mine suddenly stops working. However I do not keep everything…just in case I may need it!

I did get rid of some clutter as there were things I haven’t used and I don’t see myself ever using. I tossed extra lids from spray bottles and gave some unused cosmetics away I know I won’t use but had been hanging on to.

Revisit your spaces, get rid of some clutter and let us know what you did and how you feel by leaving a comment. We would love to hear from you.

Do You Have A “Junk Bunker”?

Monday Getting Rid of Clutter Focus

As my mailman was delivering a package to our door I stepped out onto the porch to say hi. He told me he had read that I was teaching organizing classes in a couple of weeks at the community school.

He then told me a story of his about getting rid of clutter. He said he came from a family of hoarders but his wife is completely opposite and organizes everything. They had a rack in the garage that held oil and various other things. She said it had to go as it was just a “junk bunker”.

I have never heard of a “junk Bunker”.  Have you?  Do you maybe have one and don’t know it?

They got rid of the clutter on the bunker by throwing away, recycling things not used and consolidating other items.

This week take a look around and see if you have a “junk bunker”.  What does yours look like? I’m going to take a look around my house this week to see if I have one.

3 ‘Humble’ Organizing Tips To Clearing Clutter

Monday Clearing Clutter Focus:

Yesterday it rained much of the day.  I loved it.  First of all I love the rain and second of all it helped to melt our snow.  Oh, we still have a lot of snow, no grass can be seen yet but I am sure it is down there. (This is coming from someone who loves the snow and winter).

Actually I love each season. We have had such a great winter I am now ready for spring to arrive. It must have gotten me in the mood to clear clutter as that is what I did all day Saturday—well a good chunk of the day that is. (I’ll show you tomorrow what I did).

I think a good focus right now as we are transitioning from one season to another is to just do some thinking about clearing clutter in your home. Make a plan to clear clutter:

  • Chose one area that has been bugging you
  • Set a time frame—when to start and a target date to finish
  • Enjoy the “journey”

Once you have your plan you will be chomping at the bit to clear clutter and make yourself feel lighter as winter gives way to spring. The saying about March, “In like a lamb, out like a lion” means we will have more harsh weather to come. But that just gives us another good reason to clear clutter.

What area in your home has been bugging you?

Monday Focus Yipee! I Found It

Monday Clutter Control Focus:

When my daughter comes home for Christmas my sewing room turns into a guest room. I have to clear out my sewing machine table, chair and a few baskets of projects to set up the blow up bed.

There is a decorative clock on the wall that ticks and keeps her awake so I also take this down. This year when I went to put the room back together I couldn’t find the clock. Being as organized as I am (did you get the little pun there) I searched high and low and couldn’t find it.

I missed having a clock to check the time when I was sewing. I knew I had put it in a completely logical place, but where was that place?

Just a couple of weeks ago I finally found it in another room when I was getting to something else. That made my week I tell you. I am so happy to have my clock back.

What does this have to do with focus? No matter how organized we are sometimes we still can’t find something, just keep on looking and it will eventually show up.  Is there something you want/need to look for this week that you have misplaced?

1 Sunshine Fresh Clutter Free Tip

Monday Clutter Free Focus:

How many times have you been putting on your make up or doing something else in the bathroom and thought of something you needed to do that day? Then you either go off to find a paper and pen or hope you will remember and write it down later.

Then another thought comes to mind and the other one if forgotten? This can be frustrating and aggravating. The way to avoid this is to put a note pad and pen in the bathroom. Then when you have thoughts you are prepared to write them down, not waste time leaving the bathroom and they aren’t forgotten.

See—even our minds can be clutter free as well as our homes when we are prepared. It seems like such a simple thing but little things turn in to big things.  What do you think?

De-Cluttering Goes The Distance

Monday De-cluttering Focus:

Sometimes life takes a detour and that is now all bad. Many of you know I LOVE the snow and have been a winey baby about not having many good storms this year. We finally got a couple of nice ones around Christmas (Here at our home we had about 2 feet all together) and then it got cold so it stayed.

Last Friday we got the mother lode of snow storms. When I left the house at 4:45 to go to the gym I was Amazed with a capitol A! We measured it in our driveway and we had 20 inches. By noon we had 25 inches and when I went to dig out the mail box for the mailman to drive up to we had another 3 inches.

Why do I share this with you on Monday focus? Because….for a few days my focus was not on de-cluttering my home, instead it was on snow removal and the effects the snow had on my life and the kitties we feed outside. (I have houses for the kitties but with the deep snow they couldn’t get to them).

This week focus on de-cluttering just one little place in your home. I do mean little, maybe it is putting away books on the dining room, or going through spices and getting rid of those you haven’t used in years, or it could be matching lids with bowls. Whatever is your highest priority (mine was snow) focus on that this week.

What do you think? Does this sound like a good focus for you?

Is It Better To Clear Clutter Fast Or Slow?

Monday, November 26th, 2012 by admin

Monday’s Clearing Clutter Focus:

Early Saturday morning we were hiking on a very steep trail. Going up wasn’t as hard as it was coming down the hill. On the way down it seemed harder because of the loose gravel and rocks which caused me to pause and to go pretty slow.

My daughter turned around and said to go as fast I could and get over the rocks quickly.  I tried it and do you know what? It worked, I got over the rocks and loose gravel faster and it was actually easier than picking my way down carefully.

I was thinking is this how it is with clearing clutter? Is it easier if we go fast or slow? As I work with my clients we start out slowly but as we get clearing clutter the energy switches and they are anxious to let go of thing they don’t need and it is easier to go faster.

This week consider which is easier for you—to go fast or to go slow when clearing clutter. Does it depend on your mood or on the space you are organizing? What other things effect whether you go fast or slow.

Don’t Put off Clutter Control

Wednesday, November 21st, 2012 by admin

I have been out of state for several weeks helping my daughter organize her new town home and then all the family flew in for her wedding.

I was in the D.C. area when Sandy struck and we had three days and nights of heavy rain. Then I came home and a few days later… wham! We get hit with two feet of snow (or more) here at our home.  No complaints from me.  We love it.

Our power went out and I realized it is important not to put off doing things. (Like taking a shower.) Or making a pin cushion I was giving away as a gift that needed to be sewn that very day. Neither could be done without electricity. (I think of all the people in the East who were without power and my heart goes out to them).

Because of these life lessons I experienced; our focus this week is stop putting off that “thing” you have been putting off and get it done.

Just like clearing clutter–nothing is as constant as change, but I sure hope we are back on track next week, or sooner!
