My friend and I were chatting and she said she just had to share this nifty tip for clutter control. You know all of those cords that need to be corralled? There are extension cords, phone cords, computer cords, and many others I haven’t mentioned.
Anyway she used mini (about 4 to 6 inches long) bungee cords and they worked wonderfully well. As a professional organizer when I am clearing clutter with people I often use hair elastics as they are stronger than regular elastic bands and they are readily available if you have girls in your home.
Another way to corral cords is with strips that come with Velcro on the ends to keep them snug as a bug in a rug. When storing cords, a plain ole plastic bag works great. Be sure to label it so you’ll know what the cord is to be used for at a later date.
What nifty tip do you have for clutter control of those necessary but pesky cords?
One of my sinful pleasures is sweet potato fries. I haven’t found where I can buy these at a fast food “joint” so I have to make them at home. I cut the potatoes and put them in a bag with a little olive oil and shake them so they will be coated with the oil. Then I spread them on a cookie sheet, salt them and bake for 20 minutes at a 450 degree oven. YUM!!!
The part I don’t like is cutting them up—I’m just lazy I guess but that is how it is. I was in a kitchen store and they had this great fry cutter. I bought it on the spot and when it didn’t work—I needed the Incredible Hulk to push down on the lever it was so hard–I returned it.
For Christmas I was given the gift of the commercial one thinking that would be stronger. Nope, it didn’t work either. Sadness reigned in my kitchen. This one was also returned. Can you see my pattern here? When something didn’t work rather than let it become clutter I immediately was in the clutter control “zone” and I returned them.
I think this is probably a great product for white or yellow potatoes—not for sweet potatoes. They must be harder. I did try a white potato and it cut just fine.
For this product review I can’t say it worked for sweet potatoes but it did work for the white potatoes.
When my daughter came home for Christmas the one question she asked was how to store her jewelry. She has lived in several different countries and has traveled to oodles of others. Everywhere she goes she has purchased jewelry so she needs a way to organize them so she can quickly find what she wants to wear. She also wants to initiate clutter control before it becomes overwhelming.
The product I am reviewing today is a no-nonsense yet pleasing way to organize jewelry.
•Saves space by hanging from the back of the door.
•Made of sturdy fabric.
•Pockets are clear and easy to see through.
•Small pockets that aren’t too deep make it easy to retrieve any piece of jewelry.
•Saves time when searching for jewelry to wear.
I found these at Go Organize. There were several different types. If you need to do some clutter control with your jewelry here is a sweet answer to your problems.
I was so excited when I bought my new camera last May. It was just before I went on a trip to Hawaii. It was lighter than my old one and it took great photos the easy way—point and shoot. I didn’t have time to read the instruction book so I just filed it away (this allowed me to get rid of clutter right away!) to read when I got back. It was a great feeling to know exactly where I could find it when I had time to read and practice all the new things it offered.
One of the biggest problems I see as a professional organizer is paper clutter. No matter what room we start working in getting rid of clutter in the office is a biggie. How many hours have you spent of your life searching for an important piece of paper? It is so frustrating!
I have an organizing tip that will help with getting rid of paper clutter:
1.Have a landing place for mail. Use an attractive basket and place it the room where you want to sort your mail or if you know where it goes put it in your file right away, like I did.
Getting rid of clutter in your office can free up your time so you can have less frustration and more time to do what you really want to do. If you had an extra 15 minutes a day what would you do?
All week we have been chatting about clutter control and getting rid of clutter in the living room. What did you do this week?
It is Friday and that means it is product review day. As a professional organizer as I work in people’s homes I encourage those who don’t use this product under their throw rugs to go right out and buy it.
Non Slip rug ‘liner’:
•It prevents accidents from happening as rugs aren’t slippery.
•It can actually (or so I have read) extend the life of your rugs.
•It can be used in the cupboard as a thin padding to put glasses on.
•It comes in many sizes and can be cut to fit.
I have never found that any one brand is better than another. Have you? You can find this product at all variety stores in the house ware section.
Does this ever happen to you? I keep our living room free of clutter, neat and tidy and as soon as books get tossed around and a coat and maybe a scarf and shoes are left around someone comes to visit? It’s rather irritating don’tchathink? I think so too. But it happens to all of us and life goes on.
This week we are talking tips for clutter control in the living room in case you are just joining us.
•Rearrange furniture to make the room easier to navigate. Be careful where you place coffee tables or end tables because hard corners can hurt when bumped into. If the room is crowded with too many tables maybe it is time to donate to family or a charity of your choice. If you are working on clutter control this may be an easy way to get rid of clutter.
•Do you read in your living room? Be sure you have adequate lighting for this and other tasks. Use three-way light bulbs to allow you to adjust your lamps’ brightness and save energy. I just read that they now have a three-way LED bulb.
•Keep warm, comfy blankets or quilts contained in an attractive basket. This keep clutter under control and within easy reach when needed.
A man who watched my web show asked me how my book Go Organize! is different from other organizing books on the market. I thought that was a terrific question and I am sharing my answer with you as well.
1. I teach a simple 3 step system for getting rid of clutter. You’ll fall in love with this system to get organized and to keep you organized.
2. I wrote it as if I were a friend working straightforward with the reader every step of the way.
3. Many people can see the forest but not the trees. In other words they can see they have clutter but don’t know how to get rid of it. I arm you with vital insights on how to get rid of clutter.
4. There are tons of stories which are fun and interesting and instructive all at the same time.
5. The colors, graphics and size of the book are wonderful. The colorful pages are energizing. The size is perfect to carry everywhere and can be tucked into a purse.
6. It rouses your senses as you go from a dark environment to a lights on environment. I show and guide you how to do this.
7. There are much-needed tips and tricks to get rid of clutter.
Oh, and every chapter recaps and gives you the facts you need to keep organized.
In all the places you have been in the world where would you revisit? My choice would be Italy because of all the beautiful things there and I liked the “old world feeling” in the Cinque Terra.
I am not heading to Italy any time soon but I did revisit my “pantry”. It is more like a glorified cupboard it is so small. is easy when revisiting organized cupboards, closets etc. about every 3 to 5 months to get rid of clutter that has found its Clutter controlway into these spaces.
Because I do try to keep the pantry organized there were just small things I had to do to get rid of clutter. Some of the cans that I had too many of for this space I took to the storage room. I put all soups back together. I rearranged the bottom shelves so they could hold items that belong there.
I tossed some old cereal and checked expiration dates. Just by spending 7 to 10 minutes clutter control was so easy to do as it hadn’t gotten out of control.
Due to her Marilyn's organization and specific instructions on “how to keep organized” I have been able to raise my seven children in a comfortable and well organized home.
