Staying Organized is a Myth

June 5th, 2008

Organizing Myths exposed People have always said to me, “you’re so organized”. It is true I am organized and I think it may come from living with a brother who was completely the opposite. He used to pay me a nickel to make his bed so he could find his bed when it was time for him to go to bed. And then he didn’t get nagged by my mom telling him, “make your bed, make your bed”. It was a win-win situation.

Organizing is not a destination it is a journey. I bought me a sign that says “Enjoy The Journey”. I am the type of person who wants things to be done—now. I am all about time management and I am always looking for ways to save time. Ben Franklin said “For every minute spent in organizing, an hour is earned”. Wow! That is pretty great return on our time.

I cringe when I read “Tips to help you get organized and STAY organized”. There just isn’t any such thing as staying organized.

•What staying organized really means is: you can use systems to help you organize which then becomes a way of life.
•It is organizing in little chunks of time
•Using time management ideas to save time and this leads to being organized
• Just like there are no miracle diets (wouldn’t that be nice), there are no miracle solutions to staying organized

So don’t be discouraged when you can’t seem to STAY organized, my philosophy is, “things just get undone” and that’s the way it is. Just like Humpty Dumpty it can all be put back together again.

What is your favorite trick to ‘staying’ organized?

Ohhhh, staying organized is easy, just don’t get married, don’t have kids and never, never, EVER bring anything into your house!!

Bit late for me of course, but might save someone out there.

With my kids I try to adopt the one thing in, one thing out rule.. works 99% of the time anyway, although they have discovered when it’s time to get rid of something, if they give it to a younger sibling, the problem then because theirs and they can still access the item they didn’t really want to part with!

With my craft area, I’m horrible, total hoarder, need everything and need it now, then don’t want to use it because it looks so pretty in its brand new packaging.. I was actually collecting for about 2 years before I made my first scrapbook page, the papers were so pretty I couldn’t possibly use them.. now though, I’m “trying” and I use the term loosely, not to buy anything new unless I have used something, for instance, no new papers until I have used what I have, no new embellishments unless I have used the same type on something - it’s working cause I will see something I really, really WANT, and then go off and make a page or altered item, or even a card just so I can buy the new thing! LOL Does that count as a success? LOL
