Help For Seniors In their Homes
July 31st, 2008
Yesterday a friend who is 85 said he had been to the doctor and was told there were no spare parts for his model. He said things are just wearing out. We all get older and at some point our body parts cease working as well as they used to.
When I organize for seniors I sometimes see that their very homes become obstacles.
The necessity of a walker, crutches, a chair in the shower, wheelchair, or other aid can quickly illuminate some of the “getting-around” difficulties in their homes but a few adjustments may need to be made. Even if it is something as simple as getting a different style of doorknob.
One place you can find home modification ideas is in ‘Easy Access Housing for Easier Living’, a booklet distributed by the Easter Seals Foundation. Call 800-221-6827 for a free copy.
Check out www.trspace.com if structural modifications are called for. They have a helpful manual called ‘The Right Space’ which has hundreds of 3-D drawings of how a modification should be undertaken.
